To become a Deck Officer, you must complete an accredited maritime training program. Alternatively, you can gain the required qualifications by completing a nautical science or marine engineering degree. Once you have completed your studies, you need to obtain a Certificate of Competency from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). 

This certificate is required to work as a Deck Officer on board a ship. To obtain this certificate, you will need to pass an oral and written examination, as well as a practical assessment. 

Applying to work as a Deck Officer will also require previous experience with water-based transportation or other maritime activities such as boating or sailing. When applying for a job on a cruise ship, most lines require a minimum of 2 years of previous and verifiable experience working in Customer Service, Hospitality, or Tourism.

You will need to have a good understanding of maritime law and be able to navigate using electronic and paper charts. You should also be familiar with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) codes and conventions. Speaking and writing English fluently is also essential, as this is the language of international maritime communications.

  • Excellent organizational skills
Deck Officers must be organized in order to keep track of all the moving parts on a ship. Some of their common duties include overseeing coordination between departments and supervising supply restocking when at port, both of which require someone who is highly organized. They also need to be able to plan ahead and anticipate problems before they happen.
