The path to becoming a Gynecologist in the United States is similar to all other specialized Physicians, however it requires being admitted to a Gynecology residency. The first step to becoming a Gynecologist is to complete an undergraduate degree that is relevant to the sciences, for example biology or chemistry. Although the undergraduate degrees can vary some medical schools require the completion of certain courses so it is important to look into this before applying to medical school, which is the second step to becoming a Gynecologist.

In order to be admitted to a medical school, aspiring Gynecologists must write the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). The MCAT is a standardized exam that is used across the country for all medical schools. Applying to medical school can be very competitive so it is important for all applicants to work hard and do well on the MCAT exam as well as their undergraduate studies.

Once admitted to a medical school it will take four years to complete the degree where the applicant will become a Physician, however Gynecology requires advanced studies meaning the student will need to continue their education in a Gynecology residency program. Often Gynecology is combined with Obstetrics, which is a focus on pregnancy and childbirth. Gynecology residences will take approximately four years.

Following the completion of more than 10 years of education a Gynecologist will need to complete the medical license from the state where they wish to practice.
