Hotel Managers are usually required to have a bachelor's degree in hotel administration, business administration, hospitality services, or an equivalent title. However, the experience matters most for employers in this area. Hotel Managers usually work as Front Desk Agents, Receptionists, or Assistant Hotel Managers before becoming Managers. Knowledge of a second language apart from English is generally preferred.

You can take several online certifications if you're interested in hotel management specifically. While these certifications can be helpful, they are by no means a replacement for work experience in the hospitality industry. Many larger hotel chains like to promote their Managers internally and provide training and seminars to staff they see as having management potential.

Hotel Managers are required to have a minimum of 4 to 6 years of experience in general management with proven success in the leadership of teams. They also must work flexible schedules, including weekends, nights, and holidays.

What can help you become a Hotel Manager
Hotel Managers need to be dedicated, hard-working people willing to go the extra mile for their guests. Here are a few little tidbits of advice that can help you in your quest to become the best Hotel Manage you can be:
  • Go above and beyond
If you're looking to make an impression with the higher-ups, it's always worth it to go the extra mile. For example, you might ask if there's a training available for you to learn the software system the Hotel uses for guest bookings. Or, if you're working as a Front Desk agent, find out if there's anything special you can help your guests with.
  • Look for advancement within your organization
Many larger hotel chains offer training or apprenticeship programs to help employees learn about every aspect of the hotel business, from the front desk to housekeeping. If such a program is available with your employer, inquire about the steps you need to complete so you can participate. This will show upper management how dedicated you are to growing your career.
