There are no formal educational requirements to become a Maître D', although most positions require a high school diploma or a GED. Employers will primarily be looking for demonstrated experience working in the service industry, either as a Server, Bartender, or any other role that requires top-notch customer service.

Some online colleges offer certifications to become a Maître D’. These certifications can help set you apart from the pack of applicants, but they won't replace the knowledge that comes from real-world experience.

Maître D's need to possess decent physical stamina as the job requires long periods of standing and walking. Maître D’s are usually also required to work weekends and/or holidays as needed, as well as evenings.

Since many restaurants use point-of-sale (POS) software, it may be helpful to train the most used POS systems. Many employers also provide advanced training for their Maître D’s, as you may be expected to assist the dining room staff if they encounter any technological snafus.

What can help you become a Maitre D'
  • Great customer service skills
Maître D's should always be unflappably polite to customers. They should be calm, cool, and showcase tact when dealing with unruly or disrespectful customers. Similarly, if they're having issues with a staff member, they should handle the situation discreetly and quickly.
  • Financial understanding
While you do not need a degree in finance to be successful, you should know that restaurants operate on thin profit margins. As such, Maître D's need to train their staff in upselling and know which dishes to push for that evening's service. Employers will be impressed if you can help improve profit margins.
  • Team player
Maître D's are the leaders of the dining room floor. However, they cannot do their job correctly if they are not supported by a well-trained team that respects their vision. Share any compliments you receive, work with staff, not against them, and keep your staff as best as you can.
