There is no single path to becoming a Recruiter. Successful Recruiters come from a wide range of backgrounds. However, most have at least a bachelor's degree in a field such as psychology, marketing, sociology, or human resources. All these disciplines share a common thread of being interested in people and human relationships.

Beyond a four-year degree, several recruiting certifications can help you stand out in your career path. Depending on the field you work in, specific certifications may be required to comply with labor laws and regulations.

On top of your education, work experience in a field that shows leadership and customer service experience is considered an asset. For example, if you were a retail store manager, that showcases both skills.

Much recruiting is done online nowadays. You should also make sure your Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn profiles are professional and attractive to prospective employers.

Important things to know before becoming a Recruiter
  • You get paid for your results with commissions
When you place a candidate with an employer and stay for a determined amount of time, the employer pays a fee to the recruiting agency, which also gets passed to you as the Recruiter. This means your earning potential is based on your hard work, on top of what is usually a reasonable base salary.
  • You get to work your hours
Since you are in the business of placing candidates, you determine the hours you work and when you work them. This is typically based on the availability of candidates. You can put in full-time hours or part-time hours.
  • If you're good at it, the demand for your services will be high and steady.
The labor market goes through peaks and valleys like any other commodity, but overall, companies always need staff. Carve yourself a niche market that you can help companies fill, and you will always have work.
