The path to becoming a Travel Agent in the United States is not linear because it is not a regulated industry. This means that there are no specific tests, licenses or qualifications required, however some states have some regulations put in place. For example, California, Florida, Washington, Iowa and Hawaii have laws about the Seller of Travel. It is important to look into the laws of the state you wish to work in before beginning your career as a Travel Agent.

Travel Agents work in an array of different sectors ranging from business travel to recreational travel. It is important as a Travel Agent to know which kind of Travel Agent you would like to be and research the field in detail.

Although the travel industry is not regulated there are still ways to advance your education and become more qualified in the field. There are multiple educational opportunities that focus on the travel industry and there are certificates and degrees that can help develop your career. Some degrees that are offered are specific to the travel and tourism industry, while other degrees such as economics or business administration will compliment the path to becoming a Travel Agent.

Becoming a Travel Agent is about becoming informed, educated, and landing a career in the field or starting your own business.
