Getting started at a career in writing requires preparation and research. Why? We only say so because the profession is broad, and the industries that require writers are varied. Most aspiring writers will have one thing in common, more often than not, and that's with their already established love for reading, writing, and ability to tell a story. Being an introvert or extrovert doesn't matter in this context as there is no shortage of imagination in any given person, no matter how their personality traits manifest.

When it comes to post-secondary education, Writers that want to enter a corporate office setting will require a specialized degree, encompassing all subjects from skilled copywriting to technical writing. The average duration of any degree program is 3-4 years, and some may need to complete an internship with their desired employer before they make it onto their payroll. This example includes copywriters in the advertising space or content writers for media outlets. Both require a degree, respectively.

Requiring a degree should not dissuade writers that wish to remain self-employed, however. While there are reasons why obtaining post-secondary is necessary across many industries, working as a novelist, poet, or freelance content creator is accomplished by writers with the ability to self-promote and build a supportive audience and satisfied client base. There are several approaches for self-promotion, whether through personal blogs, website content, and self-published works. Making use of these resources will help writers succeed with this alternative approach to a career!
