The minimum requirement to become an Architect in the US is to obtain a Bachelor of Architecture. The National Architecture Accrediting Board has a list of accredited schools offering Architecture programs nationwide. Most working Architects have their Masters of Architecture as well.

During your program, you will learn some theories of design and have several studio courses where you can begin to build your portfolio with hands-on projects.

Once you finish your schooling, you will need to become an accredited Architect. The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards provides a roadmap of how you can become licensed.

There are different requirements for Architects based on the state you live in, but most require some internship/work experience hours and the passing of the Architect Registration Examination exam. The exam is meant to assess your knowledge in health, safety, and welfare. The exam focuses on aspects that impact the integrity and structural soundness of a building.

Important things to know before becoming an Architect
  • You need decent math skills
Being strong in math won't hurt your chances of getting into an Architecture program, but poor math scores may impact your application. While many Architects can get by with intermediate math skills as a lot of the math they use relies on simple formulas, you will still need to take geometry, trigonometry, and calculus courses during your college studies.
  • You do not need fantastic drawing skills
Most Architects use programs like SketchUp and AutoCAD to render their designs. However, drawing freehand is the fastest way of expressing a creative idea, and then that idea takes a more formal shape thanks to computer drawings. You need to be creative and imaginative, and in school, you will learn techniques to make you better at drawing and drafting.
  • It's a detail-oriented job
Architecture is often about big, impressive results such as sweeping arches or towering skyscrapers. However, the reality of Architectural work is all about careful measurements, angles, and precise lines. If you're not a detail-oriented person, this career might be challenging for you.
