Bartenders are responsible for the safe and legal alcohol service in their establishment. They must check their patron's ID, make sure everyone is responsibly enjoying alcohol, and possibly cutting off patrons who are too intoxicated.

They also do a lot of customer service, such as greeting customers, explaining the menu to them, answering their questions about the drinks, and making recommendations. If the establishment serves food, Bartenders oversee taking and serving food orders to the bar's customers.

Bartenders are also responsible for accurately charging and taking payments from customers. Many bars have a system that cross-checks the cash and the number of drinks poured, and Bartenders need to account for all alcohol served.

Bartenders are also in charge of the bar's inventory and request backup liquor or supplies such as garnishes or ice from their barback.

Average Day of a Bartender
Usually, the first thing a Bartender does when they clock in is to check their alcohol inventory, allowing them to set a baseline of what is in stock. At the end of the night, they can check their sales against their inventory to make sure everything balances.

The Bartender then makes a list of everything they will need for the night and gives it to their barback. This can include extra bottles of liquor, straws, garnishes, ice, and so on.

Once a shift gets busy, Bartenders focus on serving drinks, taking orders, taking payments, and giving change. Bartenders need to have a good visual memory of who was at the bar first and serve customers more or less in the order in which they arrived.

When the bar is about 30 minutes from closing, Bartenders announce the last-call, where they serve their customers their final drinks and close out any open tabs they still have. They make sure all the customers leave the bar and will sometimes phone taxis to ensure no one drives under the influence.

Once the bar closes, Bartenders are responsible for several cleaning duties, such as capping all the bottles, wiping down the countertop, and so on. They must then count their money and make sure it matches their sales and that the sales match the inventory. Usually, the point-of-sale system gives the Bartender some indication of what the sales and inventory should be. Still, the Bartender has to do a manual check to ensure that whatever is in the system reflects the reality.

After that, Bartenders tip out their teammates, keep the rest of their tips, lock up and head home to sleep just as the rest of the world is waking up.
