The role of the Branch Manager exists in a middle ground between financial and management-related responsibilities. They need to have a strong grasp of the banking industry and manage their team effectively. 

Bank Managers need to ensure that their teams are complying with all banking regulations and internal policies. To do so, they may need to arrange pieces of training or even deliver training themselves. 

They are also in charge of the overall customer satisfaction levels of their branch. If a Teller is having a hard time with a customer or a special request is made, the Branch Manager will do their best to make sure that the customer is satisfied. They need to be familiar with the processes of daily transactions, such as cashing cheques or changing currencies. 

Branch Managers also need a strong understanding of banking products and services, such as lines of credit and business loans. They support their Credit Analysts and Loan Officers in their duties as needed. 

Most Branch Managers work a 9-5 Monday-Friday schedule. However, if their branch is open on weekends, they may need to work the occasional weekend shift. 

Roles & responsibilities of a Branch Manager
  • Create, implement, and evaluate the branch’s business plan.
  • Design and implement financial performance plans, strategies, and any other operational activity.
  • Hire new employees, train, mentor, supervise, and administrative discipline staff to ensure the overall efficiency of daily operations.
  • Assign, oversee, and monitor administrative and financial tasks.
  • Keep up to date on current banking regulations, policies, procedures, and protocols, and ensure that employees are too.
  • Develop and implement customer service procedures.
  • Ensure that goals and deadlines are met and that projects are led in compliance with the institution’s policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with the head office and other branch offices to ensure the smooth management of operations and overall business goals.
  • Monitor the financial transactions executed and the office activity performed at the branch office.
  • Oversee office equipment maintenance, monitoring, calibration, repair, and replacement of missing supplies, when necessary.
  • Build and maintain strategic ties with the community and network with existing and potential customers to establish long-term, trustworthy relationships.
