While it's clear that Career Coaches help people find and realize their career goals, how they accomplish this vital work and how they spend their time on an average workday may not be, whether practicing from a private business or through an agency.

For starters, how a Career Coach will approach a client depends on the client's situation. Many coaches will conduct a consultation to determine the client's skills and help them improve and develop new skills, using a screening process or meeting with potential clients. This process helps identify clients' current skills and the gaps they need to fill to increase their job prospects.

After the initial assessment, Career Coaches can get to work on their client's profile, building up assets like a resume or portfolio and helping to build up these resources if there are none. They can then guide the client throughout their job search process, tailor cover letters, and prepare them for potential interviews. As job searching can take weeks to months for most job seekers, Career Coaches should be mindful of how often they follow up and offer support to their clients to continue providing professional development advice after identifying client goals and assisting with their achievement.

Career coaching is a highly diverse field. As explained above, coaches can work outside, within, or for an organization. The client's needs and the Career Coaches' tasks will vary accordingly. However, the core coaching process remains almost the same in all cases and involves, but is not limited to, the following functions:
  • Connect with clients to learn about their academic and professional background, as well as their aspirations and goals:
  • Identify clients' skills, needs, difficulties, and opportunities;
  • using specialized tools, such as vocational tests, to determine their client's interests and skills
  • Assist clients in finding career opportunities by researching the market.
  • Share tips and recommendations to their client for keeping a job and scaling up their career ladder.
  • Advise employers on human resources and other employment-related issues.

  • Establish measurable goals, track performance, and create reports.
  • Assist clients with their job-seeking process.
  • Review and suggest improvements to enhance résumés and cover letters ·       Provide interview preparation, including performing mock interviews
  • Provide information on networking best practices both online and face-to-face.
  • Offer concrete tools and discuss strategies to improve leadership, communication, interpersonal skills, stress management, self-confidence, and conflict management skills.
