Graphic Designers craft and edit visual assets using photo editing software to convey ideas and communicate information in a more attractive way. They develop the visual identities of their clients, and their work ranges from logo design to product packaging to online advertisements.  Their designs can also serve to either detail or simplify data, present a product, or express a certain intent.

Many Graphic Designers work on a freelance basis, having to handle several assignments at a time, while others may be employed by communication departments where they're most likely to be assigned to marketing tasks, playing a key role in brand management strategies and advertising campaigns.

Graphic Designers often have a specialty in a particular design area or field. For example, some designers work exclusively in fashion advertising, while others are logo specialists. Having this niche helps you stand out from the crowd and builds you a client base that hires you for your specific skills.

Some skilled Graphic Designers teach graphic design in community colleges, art schools, or universities.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Graphic Designer
The Graphic Designer's primary responsibility is delivering quality designs to their client or employer. This can be broken down into many sub-responsibilities and daily tasks such as:

  • Identifying the client's needs while complying with established standards
  • Sketching out ideas and submitting them for feedback or approval
  • Collaborating with other involved departments, such as copywriters, marketing managers, and salespeople as needed
  • Adhering to established budgets, timelines, and guidelines
  • Keeping up to date with the latest design trends, software, and best practices

If a Graphic Designer is employed as part of an in-house team, or if they work freelance, they may have different levels of responsibilities and roles. As a freelancer, the Graphic Designer is also in charge of things like bookkeeping and invoicing. Approximately 21% of Graphic Designers are freelance workers.  If a designer works in-house, they may need to work collaboratively on other projects such as brand books and style guides.
