The scope of a Millwright's work is quite large. They need to know how machines work, and the machines they work on can vary from automotive parts to roller coasters. Millwrights generally have training in welding, electrical, plumbing, and hydraulics to understand how machines work. They also need to be able to read and draw blueprints for machine assembly and installation.

Millwrights work in many different fields such as the automotive industry, the oil and gas industry, and general construction. You can choose to specialize in any industry you find interesting, and throughout your career, you may get to experience many work sites.

There are two kinds of repairs in the mechanical field: reactive repair and preventative repair.

Reactive repair means looking at a malfunctioning machine and then figuring out the problem and having the knowledge base to fix it.

Preventative repair involves going through a checklist of potential issues with the machine and assessing that it works correctly before more extensive repairs are needed. Proper preventive care can save companies much money, so this part of the Millwrights' job is crucial.

Average Day of a Millwright

Millwrights, like many other workers in the construction industry, start their days early. It is not atypical to work a 7-3 schedule.

Once they clock in, they usually have a meeting with their supervisor about the previous day's work and asses with the team if any serious safety issues have come up.

Millwrights will spend about 2-3 hours in their day answering emails, scheduling maintenance, and ordering supplies, typically from an on-site office.

Then, Millwrights will attend to their daily tasks, which are either reactive maintenance or preventative maintenance. This will depend on the day, the worksite context, and the Millwright's specialization. Jobs are usually ordered by urgency, with the most urgent tasks needing to get done first.

After their on-site work is done, Millwrights may head back to the office to complete any paperwork and order any additional supplies.
