Paramedics assess patients' urgent needs and stabilize their condition until they can be safely transported and seen by a physician. Paramedics use life-saving techniques, medications, and equipment on ambulances.

They may use a defibrillator, administer IV fluids, and administer antidotes in the case of poisoning. If a patient needs CPR or first aid, they have a high degree of knowledge on the subject and can assist or supervise CPR. They are also able to interpret quick medical tests using electrocardiogram machines.

Once at the hospital, Paramedics must inform hospital staff about the interventions taken and the patient's status digitally with electronic data gathering equipment. Once the patient is safely handed off to an on-site caregiver, Paramedics compose a detailed report for the patient's medical file.

Paramedics are the highest-ranking medical first responder, so they also supervise any other medical staff in their team, including ambulance technicians and emergency medical technicians.

Average day of a Paramedic

Since Paramedics work in emergencies, there is no such thing as an average day. They may be called to a crime scene where a survivor has gunshot or stabbing wounds, or they may help a mother deliver a baby in her home.

Generally, their day begins by inspecting all their equipment and making sure everything is in working order. Then they stay at their standby point, usually a hospital, and wait to be dispatched.

Upon arrival at the scene, the Paramedic must quickly assess the situation and give instructions to their team members and any other bystanders at the scene. They then stabilize the patient using either medication, IV, a defibrillator, or CPR. If a patient is injured, they can apply splints or first aid.

Once the patient is safely transported to the hospital, the Paramedic communicates all interventions and information to the emergency room staff and writes a report for the patient's file.

After that, they clean their equipment and go back to their standby point.
