The primary duty of a Pastor is to have a deep and throughout knowledge of the religious texts used in their church and make the teachings of these texts accessible, usually during their weekly church sermons. Pastors also often visit people in the hospital and their homes if they require spiritual and emotional help. They can lead families who have a loved one battling a terminal illness in prayer and help them navigate difficult moments on a spiritual level.

However, a Pastor is expected to provide more than just spiritual leadership. Indeed, the Pastor is a leader of the church and has many duties, including:
  • Overseeing the church's committees, missions, and missionaries.
  • Performing baptisms, weddings, and funerals.
  • Planning community outreach activities.
  • Managing the finances of the church.
As a Pastor, job hours can be somewhat irregular. It will be primarily up to you to create a sustainable schedule and set proper boundaries around your time to achieve a work/life balance.

Average Day of a Pastor
A Pastor's work schedule is structured around a weekly format, with Sunday being the day of service and the rest of the week being dedicated to other tasks. Of course, each Pastor's schedule may vary depending on their church, their lives, and many other factors. However, since Pastoral work is not a typical 9-5 "clock in clock out" type of job, it is up to the individual Pastor to structure their time to give themselves a sense of routine and avoid burnout, which is a severe problem in the profession.

Usually, at the start of the week, the Pastor will choose the passage for that week's service and then work on it until Sunday service. Every Pastor has their process for outlines and drafts, but sermon prep is a big part of their week.

Other days of the week are for visits, either in hospitals, homes, or care homes. Pastors also attend many meetings with church elders or committees, such as deacon's meetings.

Pastors generally take their rest days on Fridays and Saturdays, spending time with their family or doing personal errands.

On Sundays, Pastors put the finishing touches on their manuscript. They may teach a Sunday school class before their service, and they always stay after the service to chat with their congregation.
