The scope for what Photographers do to busy themselves in their professional lives is broad and varies across experience and expertise. The helpful takeaway here is knowing that there is plenty of opportunity for aspiring Photographers. Overall, the primary role of a Photographer is to capture images of a predetermined subject or landscape.

Some may want to enter a career in journalism to capture images both harrowing and heartfelt. This route requires working with a bigger team, but some established Photographers can use their notoriety to publish their body of work individually. Others may prefer to take a more artistic approach and build their business on Photography for design and decorative purposes.

Wherever a Photographer decides to work and share their creative expression through static imagery, what is certain is that they will need to effortlessly work with camera equipment and get to know their way around a photoshoot and editing software.

Average day of a Photographer
How a Photographer chooses to start and end their day depends entirely on their area of expertise and the individual in question. Here are some examples of what that may look like, however:

  • Charging and packing camera equipment for on-site photoshoots. The employer may provide some equipment, like in portrait studios, for instance, where clients come for headshots or family portraits. In this case, Photographers should still prep the equipment on hand to not delay their scheduled appointments.
  • Surveying the site of the photoshoot for potential shots. This could also be an opportunity to inspect the landscape for any potential hazards to the Photographer or their clients.
  • Corresponding with potential clients about rates and schedule times, especially for weddings or other ceremonial events. These clients want to ensure that the quality of the Photographer's work meets their expectations and will often need to exchange several emails before securing a deposit fee.
  • Conceptualizing a theme or a story they would like their images to project to their audience.
  • Working with digital editing software like Photoshop to edit and enhance photos or developing photographs using a dark room.
  • Maintaining a website or social media accounts to reach a wider audience and entice potential clients.
  • Working either a part-time or a full-time schedule depending on the Photography field they enter and area of expertise.
