A Sociologist's job is to study human social behavior, including its origins, development, and functions. Sociologists also examine how different social institutions (e.g., family, education, religion) affect individuals and groups. They typically work in research organizations, government agencies, colleges and universities, or private businesses.

The responsibilities of a Sociologist can vary depending on their employer but generally involve designing and conducting research studies, analyzing data, and writing reports. They may also teach classes or provide consulting services. 

The work environment for a Sociologist is usually office-based but may also involve travel to conduct field research. Sociologists work to help and improve communities by understanding their issues and problems and coming up with solutions. Working for the benefit of others requires a great sense of compassion and empathy. Sociologists must also have strong critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as excellent writing and communication skills. They should also be able to work independently and be comfortable working with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Average day of a Sociologist

• Plan and conduct research studies and experiments to test and validate theories about societal issues (e.g., crime, group relations, and poverty)
• Develop and implement methods of data collection (e.g., questionnaires, observation, and interviews)
• Collect data regarding attitudes, values, and behavior of people
• Observe group interactions and role affiliations to collect data and identify problems
• Analyze and interpret data to understand human social behavior
• Prepare publications and reports based on research findings
• Direct and coordinate a team of Statistical Clerks and Statisticians to compile and evaluate research data and present it in a numerical format
• Consult and advise Administrators, Social Workers, Legislators, and Politicians regarding social issues and policies
• Develop approaches and solutions to the problems of social groups based on research findings and data analysis
• Design problem intervention procedures
• Liaise with colleagues and research workers in other disciplines to provide a broader interpretation of issues
• Share research findings with colleagues and other Scientists by publishing papers, holding conferences, and collaborating in the advancement of their branch of Social Sciences
• Maintain updated knowledge of the latest theories and reports developed by the international community of Sociologists
• Teach Sociology to college and university students
