Choreographers are the professionals in dance that create compelling dance routines that translate emotions through movements. They then direct rehearsals during which they instruct Dancers, Singers, and sometimes Actors on how to perform the routines they thoughtfully crafted.

Choreographers may teach at dance academies and dance schools, in which case they are most likely to give dancing lessons to beginners, helping them master moves and techniques and teaching them more complex movements as they advance in their training. Choreographers may also work for or own their own dance companies, putting on ballets or other dance recitals for live audiences.

Choreographers can also be involved in the television, movie, and theatre industry, working with people with varying dance abilities.  Depending on the production, they are usually also involved in music selection, Dancer auditions, and costume choices.

Personality of a Choreographer
  • Great interpersonal skills
With limited jobs in the dance world available, Choreographers need to maintain a reputation as reliable and professional. Choreographers also work with Dancers, directors, costume designers, and other professionals, which requires great people skills to achieve a successful finished product.
  • Leadership skills
Choreographers need to have the leadership capabilities to instruct small or large groups of Dancers. They need to coordinate the group to achieve their overall vision for the routine.
  • Patience
Sometimes, the movements don't look the same on stage as they did in your mind, or a Dancer is simply having difficulty grasping the routine. Patience with yourself and others will allow you to find calm and find ways to rework the choreography if needed.
  • Eloquence
Dance can sometimes be challenging to put into words. It's often based on a story or an emotion and then codified through movement. Choreographers need to explain their dances to their Dancers and people outside the dance world, such as journalists.
