A Copywriter is a person who oversees the writing portion of any company's marketing or advertising output. They may work on blogs, e-commerce, newsletters, e-books, one-pagers, or social media, among others. There is no limit in what kind of writing a Copywriter can be asked to do.

Some Copywriters work in what is called microcopy. These are the short pieces of text users encounter when using apps and websites. Copywriters write things like menu titles, headings, error messages, and buttons to understand microcopy principles.

We may not realize it, but every time we open a social media app, or shop for something online, or even look for a job, we're encountering the work of a Copywriter. They wrote all the text we meet to make our browsing experience either pleasant or painful.

In short, Copywriters are in charge of a brand's written voice across all its marketing and online channels.

Personality of a Copywriter
Beyond strong writing skills, Copywriters need skilled researchers and enjoy working in cross-functional teams. Some other traits in Copywriters are:
  • Good time management skills

Copywriters may work on multiple projects at a time, either within their workplace or for freelance clients. They need excellent time management skills to balance various projects and deliver copy on time.

  • Collaborative

Copywriters often work in a team with PR, marketing, customer service, and design to develop content that accurately reflects the product and write it in the brand's voice.

  • Creative

Often clients and stakeholders will give Copywriters briefs on tone, word count, and SEO keywords. The Copywriter needs to consider all the brief parameters and develop a clear, cohesive, and readable text.

  • Thick skin

Copywriters work with many different stakeholders who often have opinions on their writing. They need to have a thick skin and be able to accept edits and critique gracefully.
