Deck Officers work in water transport vessels such as cruises, riverboats, merchant ships, or any self-propelled water vehicle that transports passengers or cargo across oceans, coasts, or inland waters. They are responsible for all daily operations necessary to keep the vessel running.

Deck Officers work as part of a team; each member is assigned a crucial task to maintain the ship in top shape and does several sailing-related navigational tasks. There is a particular hierarchy within the crew, there being first, second, and third mates on board a ship. The rank of each Deck Officer is assigned based on seniority and performance.

Depending on the size of the ship, the team of Deck Officers will be bigger or smaller. There is no universal rule of how big the team should be - this is often decided by the company that owns the ship or the Captain. Deck Officers are also sometimes hired by private companies such as cruise lines, water transportation companies, or even the Federal Government to work as part of the Coast Guard.

Personality of a Deck Officer
Deck Officers have a few common personality traits that help them succeed in their job. Here are a few of them:
  • Adaptable
Being able to adapt to changing conditions is crucial for a Deck Officer. The weather and sea conditions can change rapidly at sea, and Deck Officers must be able to adjust their plans and techniques accordingly.
  • Respectable
A Deck Officer must be able to command the respect of the crew and maintain a cool head in difficult situations. The crew will look to the Deck Officer for guidance and direction in times of crisis. Therefore, they must be able to keep a level head and make quick decisions under pressure.
  • Hard-working
The ability to work long hours is also essential for any Deck Officer. The job requires long shifts and often irregular hours, and they have be able to remain focused and alert even when they are tired.
