Different cultures around the world have different perceptions of hair and how it should be worn. Hairdressers have existed for thousands of years, and their job has remained essentially the same since then, cutting and styling people's hair per social or cultural convictions or to everyone's sense of style.

Hairdressers usually work in hairdressing salons or barbershops. These establishments may vary according to the type of customers they serve. Some hairdressing salons focus primarily on female-presenting customers, offering other services that may include makeup consultations and application, nail care services, and spa treatments. In contrast, barbershops specialize in male-presenting clients, as their Hairdressers or Barbers are also trained in cutting and styling facial hair.

While hair salons and barbershops are the most common workplaces for Hairdressers, they can also be found working in theatre, television, and motion picture production studios as part of the hair and costumes department. In these cases, Hairdressers are usually required to work with wigs, extensions, and other products to accurately create an image coherent with the time and setting of the production.

Personality of a Hairdresser
Beyond a love for hair and beauty, Hairdressers are usually outgoing, social people who like getting to know their clients and talking to all kinds of different people. Here are some other personality traits that can help you become a successful Hairdresser.
  • Honest
If a client wants a particular color or treatment, but you can see that their hair is too damaged to handle it, you need to be honest about their options. Your main concern should be the health of your client's hair, not selling them an expensive treatment that can further damage their hair or worse.
  • Great listener
Clients don't always know the technical terms for what they want. They might say something vague like "some layers, not too many, and some long bangs." It's up to you to try and interpret that direction by asking questions and figuring out what the client wants. Furthermore, people like talking about their work, kids, and relationships with their Hairdresser. Being a good listener will help you strengthen your client relationships.
  • Creativity
Sometimes thinking outside the box and suggesting different treatments or styling tips to clients is what they need. Clients appreciate Hairdressers that can propose innovative solutions to their hair problems, such as a repairing treatment or a protective hairstyle.
