A Lifeguard is a person who is in charge of ensuring the safety of all patrons at a body of water, be it a beach, an aquatic park, or a pool. They are strong swimmers trained in underwater rescue techniques.

Lifeguards are usually employed by beach and pool administrations, hotels and resorts, and any other recreational and community establishment that offers aquatic activities.

Some Lifeguards only work in the summer, while others may work year-round. Year-round Lifeguards are more common in Florida and California, where the climate is more favorable to year-round swimming. Many beaches have a skeleton crew of Lifeguards for the winter months and a much larger corps of Lifeguards for the summer season. If you live in a Northern area and wish to work year-round, indoor pools are always an option.

Lifeguarding is a popular summer job among college students since they get to spend lots of time outside, make new friends, and make money for the school year. Some Lifeguards turn the job into their full-time employment and then make their way up the ladder to pool or district supervisors.
Personality of a Lifeguard
  • Reliable
Lifeguards are in charge of people’s safety; they need to be very reliable and take their job seriously.
  • Good People Skills
Lifeguards need to make sure that all patrons follow the rules of the pool or beach, and most rules have safety considerations. Sometimes patrons can be unruly or difficult, and Lifeguards need to explain to them calmly why certain behaviors are not allowed.
  • Team Player
Lifeguards usually work in pairs or larger teams. They need to get along with their colleagues and communicate with their fellow guards clearly and efficiently in an emergency.
