Medical Office Assistants greet patients arriving at hospitals, medical clinics, and offices of healthcare professionals. They schedule medical appointments and direct patients to the appropriate areas. They also maintain front desk security and security access lists, receive and record payments, and may perform other clerical duties, as instructed.

There is a discernable difference between Medical Office Assistants and Medical Assistants. The latter is different in that they provide direct assistance to healthcare professionals to treat diseases and injuries. Medical Office Assistants provide more administrative support to the offices they work in to ensure that all patients receive the highest quality of care and service.

Medical Office Assistants are the backbone of a doctor’s office. With strict time constraints and numerous patients to handle, an office would crumble without this individual’s levelheaded nature and professional demeanor.

They support the medical office structure by maintaining an even flow of patient intake schedules and ensuring subsequent appointments are booked in advance to avoid scheduling issues in the future.

Personality of a Medical Office Assistant
  • They are compassionate and nonjudgmental
Professional Medical Office Assistants require an adequate bedside manner as much as nurses and doctors. There is no telling how a patient is feeling or the severity of their illness when checking in with reception. Remaining neutral but friendly always does a world of good for patients.

  • They take the time to listen
Listening is not a quickly learned skill in this modern-day and age. But for Medical Office Assistants, this skill comes more naturally. There are a few reasons why this might be, starting with listening carefully to instructions delivered by nurses and doctors, which come fast in a bustling clinic.

  • They are adaptable workers
Working within a medical clinic can mean that there are a lot of competing tasks and changing demands, depending on the time of day and situation. Medical Office Assistants have equipped themselves with skills to readily adapt to this environment, always staying ahead of the hustle and bustle.
