Painters prepare, protect, and decorate the interior and exterior surfaces by applying materials such as paint, wallpaper, and other finishes and special coatings. They can use various tools and techniques such as brushes, rollers, or sponges to get their desired final effect.

Painters have an excellent grasp of color theory and understand the requirements for painting surfaces such as wood, drywall, or metal.

Painters are usually self-employed but can sometimes be employed by Contractors or by maintenance departments of buildings and other establishments.

Other Painters are considered visual artists. They apply paint to canvases and other materials to capture a person, scene, or emotion. Indeed, painting is an integral part of visual arts and provides an insight into historical dress, ideas, and customs. While artistic and Commercial Painters do very different jobs, they have the same name since they work with the same material. For this article, we will be discussing commercial or industrial Painters, not artistic Painters.

Personality of a Painter
Painters usually enjoy working with their hands and appreciate the variety of work that comes with the job. Here are some other personality traits that can help you succeed as a Painter:
  • Listening skills
Painters need to listen carefully to the instructions given to them by clients and site managers, both for safety and quality purposes. They should ask questions when appropriate and make sure they're fulfilling their brief correctly on every job site they're on.
  • Basic knowledge of color theory
Color theory understands how specific colors look next to one another and achieves contrast, gradients, and harmonious color play. These are all foundational components of a Painter's job, and Painters constantly have to use their color theory to make recommendations to their clients.
  • Basic math skills
Painters need to calculate the cost of materials and the surface area needing painting to give accurate quotes to their clients. You don't need to be a math genius to be a commercial Painter, but a strong math foundation is necessary to succeed.
