Plumbing is a trade specializing in the maintenance of water systems in industrial and residential settings, with a Plumber being the skilled tradesperson who performs these duties. These can range from working with drinking water and sewage to installing appliances that rely on water lines to function like dishwashers and washing machines. Plumbers will undergo additional training to install most plumbing fixtures such as sinks, bathtubs, and toilets. Some of the best paying jobs are in the more unusual specialties since there is less competition

Curiously, Plumbers are one of the world's oldest careers, with some job interactions having existed as far back as 4000 BC. As modern plumbing took off throughout large cities in the 19th and 20th centuries, Plumbers and the plumbing market overall has been an enticing one. When it came time to teach the trade to newcomers, what began with job shadowing and apprenticing, led to many colleges and trade schools worldwide introducing programs at their respective institutions to help accommodate the increasing influx of students interested in learning the trade.

Personality of a Plumber
  • They are coordinated
It is no surprise that Plumbers are required to work with their hands. The work is physically demanding, so bodily coordination and hand-eye coordination are especially essential for excelling in this role.
  • They are problem-solvers
It is not always abundantly clear what the plumbing issue is that your client is experiencing, and certainly not all pipe obstructions are visible. Plumbers will benefit from having strong problem-solving skills and an investigative, even analytical personality overall.

  • They are skilled communicators
Building a roster of happy clients takes more than just a job well done. Communicating every detail, big or small, to your clients will help put their fears at ease. This includes honesty as a best practice since some plumbing projects are complex and involve more time and effort, which translates to a heftier invoice. Let them know up front, and you might just have repeat business!
