TUTOR – WRITING AND READING CENTER (PART-TIME)

Truman College's Writing and Reading Center is seeking a part-time writing Tutor to provide students with tutoring and instructional support within the tutoring center and in classes as embedded tutors. Spanish bilingual candidates are preferred. The Writing and Reading Center at Truman is a study space designed to help students thrive academically. Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work; and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management and organizational skills to their specific courses. Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring in reading and other subject areas. Tutors also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors; and provide on-line tutoring services to students enrolled in distance learning courses.

Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring in math, reading, writing, English, and other subject areas. Tutors also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors; tutor students in math and writing labs; and provide on-line tutoring services to students enrolled in distance learning courses. Performs related duties as required.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Provide academic assistance and tutoring to students on an individual basis.
- Tutor students to help them gain a deeper comprehension of course materials and a better understanding of work assignments to improve their academic success.
- Craft effective tutoring plans to address tutee’s weaknesses and strengths; motivates students and provides them with confidence to feel successful.
- Provide students with learning strategies including ways to improve study skills and retention, how to organize work, effective use of time, and how to build better study habits.
- Schedule individual tutoring sessions at a college’s Tutoring / Learning Resource / Academic Support Center, based on students' requests for tutoring in a specific subject area, course or discipline.
- Assist the tutee in problem solving and applying critical thinking techniques in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.
- Help students develop positive attitudes and a high level of motivation towards learning and studying, build self-confidence and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
- Tutor students and provide students with strategies to develop effective study habits and skills to improve academic capabilities.
- Prepare students for standardized testing and provide strategies to overcome test anxiety.
- Participate in tutor orientation and attend professional development and training sessions to increase competency in subject areas and improve tutoring skills.
- May conduct academic skill reviews and lead workshops on academic skills.
- Provide ongoing communication with students, instructors and academic advisors regarding academic progress of individual students.
- Maintain records on tutoring activities. Provide periodic student assessments and evaluations as required.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a field related to the subject(s) being tutored, OR similar technical certifications and training. Specific additional requirements or certifications may be required depending on the assignment area.Bachelor’s or higher in a field related to college-level Writing, Reading, or ESLAbility to provide bilingual tutoring in Spanish, highly preferredAvailability to work mornings and afternoons, Monday through Thursday, and / or Saturday mornings, preferredCompletion of tutoring certification preferredExperience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the post-secondary instructional level is strongly preferredExperience working in a large, urban community college environment with a diverse cultural and ethnic student body is highly desirableKnowledgeable of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)Proficiency in the subject area(s) to be tutoredo College level composition and readingo Development Educationo English as a Second Language in the College classroom and Dev Ed classroomKnowledge of effective tutoring techniques and strategies in subject area(s)Knowledge of tutoring strategies used for improving students study skillsExcellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skillsInitiative – Demonstrate willingness to take on responsibilities and job challengesAttention to Detail – Pay careful attention to detail and thoroughness in completing work tasksDependability – Demonstrate reliability, responsibility, and dependability and fulfill obligationsTechnology Savvy – Capable user of technology who understands the role of technology in the institution and who will guide and support its efficient and effective useAdditional Information :
