Global Director, Risk Leadership

For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. Nine out of nine times in the last decade, IJM's Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50% and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. Our vision is to scale our impact to protect 500 million people living in poverty from violence. Embedded within the Strategy and Portfolio Management team of the Legal, Governance, Risk, and Compliance division, the new Global Director, Risk Leadership role will play a critical part in achieving that vision as swiftly and effectively as possible.
The Director of Risk Leadership will be a forward-thinking doer who will architect, build and lead a bespoke enterprise risk management (ERM) framework tailored to IJM's unique mission, global operations, and risk appetite. This senior leader will bring broad and deep expertise in diverse risk management philosophies and models, and will translate that knowledge into a dynamic, values-aligned, behavior-centric risk strategy and risk-management framework that equips IJM to pursue its mission with boldness and resilience in the volatile, uncertain, and complex socio-political contexts in which it operates across the globe, nimbly adapting to evolving threats and seizing evolving opportunities.
The Director of Risk Leadership will serve on the LGRCs leadership team and will lead the divisions global risk management subfunction, encompassing policy, compliance, safeguarding, internal investigations, and enterprise risk management.
This position is hybrid (onsite Tuesdays & Thursdays) if located in the Washington, DC area or remote for non-local candidates. It reports to the Chief Risk Officer and General Counsel.
Responsibilities
- Lead a collaborative process to architect, build, implement, and manage a bespoke global risk management framework tailored to the organization's high-risk operational context that aligns with IJM's organizational values, reflects IJM's operational realities, and drives mission success.
- Develop, articulate, and implement the governing standards on IJM's approach to risk (e.g., IJM's risk tolerance and appetite) and ensure that it is reflected in IJM's policies, operations, and activities.
- Design and roll out policies, procedures, and tools that support proactive, mission-aligned risk management under the risk management framework.
- Build the risk management sub-function of LGRC into a cohesive (but non-siloed) team, integrating and aligning global policy management, compliance, internal investigations, and enterprise risk management, and ensuring that the risk management sub-function integrates and enables other LGRC functions.
- Take a human-centered and behavior-focused approach to all design and development efforts, prioritizing approaches and solutions designed to drive sustainable behavior change that is vital to effectively manage risks, seize opportunities presented by uncertainty, and accelerate mission success.
- Develop and manage the standards and processes for negotiating, securing, and administering IJM's portfolio of business insurance policies.
- Collaborate with Global Technology Solutions and Global Safety & Security to develop and oversee IJM's information security and data classification framework, ensuring alignment with legal, operational, and safeguarding standards.
Strategic Leadership
Serve as a strategic advisor to the Chief Risk Officer and executive team on emerging risks and mitigation strategies.Equip leaders and relevant personnel at all levels to identify enterprise-wide and other risks (internal and external), prioritize them, and make informed decisions to manage those risks.Develop, socialize and drive adoption of the organization's risk appetite and tolerance.Promote and enable the integration of risk management into organizational planning, program design, and decision-making processes.Foster a culture of risk awareness and proactive risk management across all levels of the organization.Serve as a thought leader on risk-related matters.Promote a culture that embraces the notion that most risks whether operational, financial, legal, or reputational are either caused or exacerbated by human decisions and actions, and that by understanding the behavioral drivers behind these actions, IJM at every level can better predict and prevent them.Lead the development and integration of crisis management and business continuity planning across IJM's global operations.Represent IJM in global risk forums and networks to share best practices, learn from peers, and influence sector-wide standards.Leadership & People Management
Supervise and coach direct reports to build their capacity, advance their professional development, and foster a healthy, high-performing, collaborative, and transparent team culture.Communicate well, drive organizational and divisional vision and strategies, and promote the LGRC value proposition and norms within the subfunction.Supervise the Senior Lead, Global Policy Management, ensuring that the role is successful in (a) developing and managing a "next-gen" global standards and policy framework requiring polices to be coherent, accessible, aligned with IJM's risk posture and operational needs, and developed to propel IJM's mission and prioritized risk management, and (b) carrying out the role's responsibilities as owner of IJM's global safeguarding policies, processes, and practices.Supervise the Senior Lead, Global Compliance, ensuring that the role is successful in developing and managing a compliance framework that not only verifies that the organization is operating with integrity and accountability in accordance with internal and external standards, but also emphasizes learning, adaptive management, and continuous improvement, facilitating the integration of insights from monitoring and evaluation into risk management strategies.Supervise the Global Specialist, Internal Investigation, ensuring that the role is successful in effectively overseeing the integrity, independence, and effectiveness of internal investigations and investigative processes, in executing case management responsibilities, and in driving alignment with IJM's values and risk management framework and with legal standards.Partnership, Cross-Functional Collaboration, and Communication :

Develop and deliver training, guidance, tools, and other resources to build risk literacy and ownership across all levels of the organization.Mentor and develop risk champions across the organization.Foster a culture of transparency, accountability, and informed risk-taking.Champion continuous learning and adaptive risk practices in dynamic environments.Promote a culture of adaptive learning, transparency, and accountability in risk practices.Champion the development and use of creative, behavior-centric, capacity-development solutions that go beyond traditional training methodologies focused mostly on knowledge transfer.Measurement, Learning, Reporting, and Innovation
Establish clear governance structures and mechanisms for risk oversight and reporting.Support the CRO in providing regular, insightful risk reporting to the Board of Directors and senior leadership.Develop and maintain risk dashboards, reports, and communication tools.Support the adoption and effective use by LGRC of human- and behavior-centric OKRs.Support the establishment of LGRC practices that regularly assess the effectiveness of behavior-change risk initiatives and use those learnings to fuel continuous improvement.Explore and implement technology-enabled tools (e.
