POSITION SUMMARY :
Responsible for executing the Pest Control Program. Schedule applications maintain and order chemicals, fertilizers, biologicals and supplies. Continue development of the IPM program. All tasks are subject to Growers and General Manager approvals. The position requires knowledge of pest and disease problems that may affect crops and knowledge of techniques to control pests and diseases. Must understand greenhouse dynamics and operation. Must remain current on all Federal and State safety requirements and maintain compliance within the department. The position requires an Oregon private pesticide applicator license.
SUPERVISION AND ADMINISTRATION :
1. Schedule Applications :
- Facilitate weekly scheduling of applications and plant health care requests.
- Maintain and update computer databases.
- Ensure all information meets safety regulations for all hazardous chemicals.
- Coordinate with Safety Officer and Operations Manager to keep SDS current.
- Maintain companywide SDS, perform periodic audit for full compliance.
- Coordinate updates of Hazcom program with Safety Officer.
2. Training :
Train employees on specific chemical hazards that they might encounter and how to respond to ensure OSHA compliance.Maintain training records.Train and supervise Chemical Technicians in proper procedure and policy to include all Worker Protection Standard procedures, spray posting technique, proper calculation, mix, measure, application and disposal of chemical.Ensure posting of all applications as required by EPA Worker Protection Standard.3. Ordering :
Follow purchase order procedure in the ordering of equipment and supplies.All purchases over $1,000.00 require managerial approval.Dispose of chemical containers in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations.This includes recycling containers whenever possible.Maintain inventory, dispense and purchase personal protective equipment.Trains handlers on the limitations, cleaning, and disposal of equipment.Remain current on all Federal and State safety regulations (OSHA) related to chemical use.Audit records annually to ensure compliance of records.Keep Human Resources (HR) informed as to the reasons for all absences of self or employees.Grants initial approval for employee discretionary leave.4. Approving timesheets :
Schedule weekend employees.Review employee timecard punches daily and at the end of pay periods.Make adjustments as able or informs HR as to needed changes.Informs General Manager about employee’s subject to excessive overtime pay.Housekeeping.5. Supervision :
Review and evaluate employees at least yearly.Suggest employees for promotions and pay raises.Follow company policies and safety regulations.Discipline all employees in accordance to company policy and safety regulations.Constantly look for ways to improve working conditions, improve efficiency, and reduce costs of producing crops.CHEMICAL APPLICATION :
1. Schedule applications :
Coordinate and schedule the application of chemicals to crops as the Growers require. (If there is a disagreement as to which treatment would be appropriate, the Grower will make the final decision.)Maintain weekly schedule as determined by Growers.Provide oversight and able to maintain chemical inventories and order chemicals. (All new chemicals are subject to Growers’ approval.)Maintain inventory of no more than a 6-month supply of each chemical on the property at all times.Ensure proper storage of all chemicals.2. Regulatory compliance :
Monitor changes and new pesticide regulations and communicates these changes to Growers.Research regulations for clarification when necessary.3. Inventories :
Perform monthly inventory of chemicals.4. Spray application process :
Monitor spray applicators are filling out all required paperwork for chemical application.Calculate, measure and mix chemicals for application.Post and unpost all chemical application areas as required by the EPA (Worker Protection Standards).IPM / PEST & DISEASE IDENTIFICATION :
Facilitate the integrated pest management program (IPM) with Growers and managers.Manage current database information and communicate the results to Growers and managers.Oversee monitoring and coordination of weed control as part of IPM program.Oversight of IPM Specialist and able to perform the following :
a. Coordinate the sampling of plants and soils for nutrient analysis and disease identification, as requested by Growers.
i. Insects : Monitor plants; count and record insects; replace sticky traps.ii. Disease : Monitor plants; plant disease vectors.iii. Weeds : Monitor weeds in and around greenhouse structures.Manager banker, indicator and trap plants.Follow protocol for placemen, care, scouting, rotation and disposal.Maintain biological inventory and release beneficial insects.b. Record keeping :
i. Maintain established databases for recording results.Communicate to appropriate chain of command effectively between IPM Department and other departments to main efficiencies.Able to operate all equipment and vehicle assigned with training / certification. Able to train employees on use of equipment, vehicle and tools.Promote company safety culture and policies. Ensure employees are appropriately using required PPE for tasks.Safeguard all section equipment / tools and return to proper storage.Other related work duties required by supervisor.Adhere to all company policies.ESSENTIAL SKILLS :
Advance knowledge of growth habits, plant characteristics; understand advanced scientific principles and terminology. Able to diagnose common pest, disease, and nutritional problems. Able to identify common weeds, growth habits, reproductive characteristics and ability to vector pests and diseases. Understand growing conditions and how they interact with pest and disease management.Able to instruct and evaluate direct reports, communicate both verbally and in writing.Advanced algebraic math skills are needed along with the ability to calibrate and maintain equipment and injectors.Able to organize and prioritize daily tasks.Advanced reading and writing skills. Ability to correctly interpret product labels, SDS and regulatory laws.Able to communicate to provide direction and communication within the various departments. Work well and communicate with other employees.Advanced computer skills. Able to input and maintain department databases, use word processing, spreadsheet and industry-specific software.Ability to operate all vehicles. Demonstrate safe working habits in all tasks to include reporting all accidents, property damage, problems with vehicles and equipment immediately to appropriate department.Mechanical skills to operate and maintain equipment.
