SUMMARY :
The Senior Staff Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of the organization’s financial records and supporting core accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, monthly and year-end close processes, and financial reporting. This position acts as a technical resource within the Finance department, performs complex reconciliations, supports audits, and contributes to the development and improvement of accounting policies, processes, and internal controls. The Senior Staff Accountant may mentor junior team members and take ownership of critical project-based initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :
General Ledger & Financial Close
- Own key aspects of the monthly and annual close processes, including preparation and entering of journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
- Maintain accurate and complete general ledger records in accordance with GAAP and GASB
- Prepare and analyze account reconciliations, including cash, revenue, prepaids, fixed assets, and accrued liabilities and resolve any discrepancies timely
- Ensure timely completion of responsibilities aligned with the monthly close calendar
- Assist in preparing internal financial reports, variance analyses, and schedules for management review
Audit & Compliance
Support the year-end audit process by preparing schedules, responding to audit inquiries, and coordinating documentationEnsure compliance with internal accounting policies, controls, and proceduresMaintain supporting documentation for all financial transactions in accordance with recordkeeping policiesTechnical Support & Process Improvement
Evaluate current processes and identify areas for automation, efficiency, and control improvementsAssist in implementing new accounting systems, tools, or modules as neededDocument and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for assigned areasCross-Functional Support
Work closely with AP and AR staff to ensure proper transaction coding, issue resolution, and accurate financial reportingCollaborate with operational teams (e.g., Event Services, Procurement, HR) to ensure accounting implications of their activities are understood and accurately capturedAssist with special projects, system upgrades, and ad hoc reporting as requiredTeam Support & Mentoring
Serve as a resource and informal mentor to junior accounting staffLead by example with high standards of accuracy, integrity, and professionalismPerform other duties as assignedREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, including general ledger responsibilityStrong working knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reportingProficient in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applicationsExperience with ERP / accounting systems (e.g., Oracle, NetSuite, Sage, Microsoft Dynamics, etc.)Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently with strong organizational skillsExcellent analytical and problem-solving abilitiesHigh attention to detail and a commitment to accuracyStrong written and verbal communication skillsAbility to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretionPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related fieldCPA or progress toward CPA certification strongly preferredExperience in a complex or public-sector environment (e.g., events, venues, hospitality, or government)Prior involvement in external audits or audit prepFamiliarity with fixed assets, revenue recognition, and project accountingExperience leading process improvement or finance system implementationsExperience with Business CentralWORK SCHEDULE : This position requires standard office hours and requires the ability to work a flexible schedule as needed. Travel to other MCCA facilities may be required.
DRESS CODE : Business formal. The expectation is to project the dignity and decorum expected by the public, including appropriate dress and good grooming.
