Job Title : Music Therapist

Primary Purpose :

A music therapist’s key responsibilities include establishing goals for therapy, collecting and analyzing data from the student’s responses to music, and customizing treatment plans to each student. New treatments must be improvised to meet the student’s musical therapy needs. The music therapist will integrate behavioral, developmental, and neurological approaches into music therapy treatments. Music therapy provides emotional support, coping mechanisms, and physical rehabilitation. Students are provided with a creative outlet for their feelings through music.

Qualifications :

Education / Certification :

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university

Hold certification from the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT)

Special Knowledge / Skills

Knowledge of the principles and practices of music therapy and music instruction methods

Knowledge of the various appropriate music therapy activities used for the therapeutic treatment of individuals with disabilities

Demonstrates effective and professional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

Experience

At least one year of therapeutic experience working with school aged children

Major Responsibilities and Duties :

Instructional Strategies

• Use therapeutic music interventions in accordance with students’ physical or cognitive needs, capabilities, and interests.
• Assesses needs and administers direct music therapy treatments in order to provide habilitative and rehabilitative services
• Performs a thorough evaluation, assessing the needs of the student receiving services, and sets measurable objectives.
• Plans and organizes music therapeutic activities in accordance with students' needs, capabilities, and interests.
• Observes and evaluates students' reactions to various experiences and documents therapeutic changes and progress in the IEP.
• Adjusts therapy to achieve maximum results.
• Reports progress to the teacher, ARD committee, student receiving services, and family members or guardians.
• Provides treatment progress and status documentation in accordance with the IEP goals.
• Maintains and submits documentation in the format and timelines required by the ARD committee and in compliance with, local, state and federal regulations
• Attends ARDS, teacher and parent or guardian conferences
• Develops, teaches, and assesses the plan of therapy.
• Uses appropriate methods and tools in all teaching and training activities.
• Maintains professional conduct in relation to information that is confidential in nature sharing information only when the recipient's right to access is clearly established and the sharing of such information is clearly in the best interest of the student served.
• Performs other duties as assigned in response to the person serviced, office, and / or program needs Qualifications

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
