Montana 4-H Foundation Director & Development Officer

The Director & Development Officer provides leadership in planning and executing a comprehensive annual and long-range resource development / fundraising program for the Montana 4-H Foundation. This position is accountable for private sector fund development; accounting, management, and administration of restricted and unrestricted funds; donor and sponsor relationships; and promoting the mission of the Foundation. The Director & Development Officer reports to the Director of the Montana 4-H Center for Youth Development, with input from the Foundation Board of Directors. This position requires frequent travel throughout the state. The 4-H Foundation is housed on the campus of Montana State University in Bozeman, MT, which is the preferred work location. Alternative work locations may be considered.

Position Details General Statement The Montana 4-H Foundation, Inc. and Montana State University Extension are seeking applications for the position of Director & Development Officer of the Montana 4-H Foundation. The Foundation is a separate 501c3 membership organization that partners with the Montana 4-H Center for Youth Development at MSU to provide ongoing financial and other resource support to the Montana 4-H program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Resource development is the major function of the position and will include the following :

  • Lead the Board of Directors in the development of a long-range strategic plan of resource development for the Foundation consistent with the identified needs and priorities of the Montana 4-H program obtained from the Montana 4-H Center Director.
  • Work with the Board of Directors, including the Director of the Montana 4-H Center for Youth Development, to identify annual funding needs of the 4-H Foundation.
  • Create, implement, and manage the annual budget and fundraising and operations plans.
  • Plan, direct, and implement all fundraising activities related to the Foundation including donor contacts, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Research, identify and solicit support from the private sector (individuals, groups, businesses, corporations, foundations, etc.) in cooperation with Board members and other volunteer fundraisers.
  • Prepare proposals, as needed, for major donor agreements, endowments, and grant applications.
  • Receive, acknowledge, and administer all gifts to the Foundation in accordance with established Foundation policies, including maintaining accurate donor records and notes in the donor database and preparing periodic reports.
  • Communicate status of funds to appropriate stakeholders such as donors, recipients, and managed account owners.
  • Lead the creation, design, and administration of fundraising campaigns.
  • Facilitate the engagement with and reconnect alumni to Montana 4-H.
  • Design, coordinate, and provide training on fund development and special projects to Directors, counties, other volunteers, and extension staff.
  • Implement fund development and other job duties in accordance with the best practices for positive youth development, state and national 4-H guidelines and best practices for fund development, following the guidelines and ethics for Montana 4-H.

Coordinate operation and financial management of the Foundation by :

  • Work in partnership with Foundation's Program Manager to maintain an updated donor management information system, financial information system, and reports to counties and donors.
  • Work with the Montana 4-H Center Director and staff to obtain impact statements and funding priorities for statewide 4-H programming and to provide and account for budgeted program funds and donor opportunities.
  • Hire, manage, and evaluate staff.
  • Provide leadership to all contracted individuals.
  • Provide effective and timely communications to Directors, donors, county and state extension staff, volunteers and 4-H organizations through newsletters, website, and social media avenues.
  • Maintain effective relations with the Board of Directors, including budget and fiscal reports, and board designated committees.
  • Participate in training and professional affiliations.
  • Provide outreach activities including presentations and workshops, as they relate to the 4-H Foundation.
  • Accountability and relationships for this position shall be to :

  • MSU Extension, Montana 4-H Center for Youth Development, and the Montana 4-H Foundation Board of Directors for effective management and operation of the Montana 4-H Foundation.
  • Required Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Earned Bachelor's degree and relevant work experience in fundraising, nonprofit management, or other related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience in foundation and nonprofit management, including grant writing and management.
  • Demonstrated experience in non-profit fundraising, including planned giving, major gifts and grant writing, as well as donor identification, cultivation, and stewardship.
  • Demonstrated understanding of 4-H youth development programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing leadership in planning, organizing, directing, implementing, and evaluating fund development programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining and building donor relationships and volunteer involvement in fund development.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining and building involvement in fund development and activities.
  • Database management knowledge and experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master's degree in related field.
  • A minimum of five years in a professional fund development, donor-management position.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with constituencies at the university, county, state, and national levels; a familiarity with multi-cultural and a variety of socioeconomic audiences; an interest in working with people from varied backgrounds.
  • Understanding of the land grant university mission.

  • Have the ability to manage multiple and complex tasks with attention to detail.
  • Have the ability and willingness to work a varying schedule that will include evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Possess an understanding of positive youth development.
  • Possess sound judgement and self-motivation.
  • Participate in training and professional affiliations.
  • Have the ability to travel on a frequent basis.
  • Have the ability to represent MSU, MSU Extension, Montana 4-H, and the Montana 4-H Foundation to others in a professional, courteous, and competent manner.
  • Ultimately, the successful candidate will be relational, responsive, and reliable.

    Position Special Requirements / Additional Information

  • Must possess a valid driver's license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State / University vehicles. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver's license, must obtain a valid Montana driver's license within 60 days of hire.)
