Job description

LVN – Family Medicine (Full Time)

Job Summary

Under direct supervision of an RN or provider, performs routine patient care, excluding administration of IV medications and venipuncture, following established policies, procedures, and standards; follows Quality of Service Standards and Universal Precautions.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Perform routine patient care under supervision, excluding IV medications and venipuncture.
  • Take vital signs and remove or apply dressings for assessment by a licensed provider.
  • Clean or irrigate wounds after provider assessment; perform shaving, skin preparation, ear washes, NG insertion & lavage, and urinary catheter insertion & irrigation.
  • Reinforce standardized self‑care procedures as directed by a licensed provider.
  • Recognize and respond to acute emergencies following established procedures.
  • Orient patients to system policies and practices.
  • Provide and review instruction sheets based upon provider direction.
  • Administer medications (excluding IVs) as ordered by a provider.
  • Observe and document patient response to medications and therapy.
  • Perform tuberculin, coccidioidin, and histoplasmin skin tests if part of a tuberculosis control program.
  • Administer immunizations per written protocols.
  • Arrange and organize treatment rooms prior to procedures : set up instruments, drapes, sponges in sterile trays; assemble equipment as directed.
  • Assist licensed providers with patient examinations and treatments, including positioning, restraining patients, and offering assistance.
  • Provide assistance in treatment rooms during minor surgical procedures and various diagnostic examinations by positioning and draping.
  • Hold clamps or retractors, sponge vascular areas, and pass instruments as specifically directed by the physician.
  • Ensure patient safety during procedures.
  • Prepare and transport medical equipment and laboratory specimens.
  • Clean and disinfect instruments / equipment according to standardized procedures.
  • Follow Universal Precautions and report incidents to the Department Administrator or designee.
  • Maintain departmental files : pull files and assemble forms prior to appointments, file returned diagnostic reports as directed.
  • Initiate and complete diagnostic requisition forms, telephone prescriptions to pharmacies, relay medical information from physician to patient, and vice versa.
  • Chart patient information in the medical record as indicated.
  • Perform laboratory tests including urine dip‑tests, acetone tests, hemoccult tests, and tests to determine pH, protein, and PKU.
  • Conduct hearing, vision, glaucoma, and visual acuity tests.
  • Collect, by non‑invasive and invasive techniques, specimens such as urine, sputum, and stool and preserve them for testing.
  • Participate in department quality assurance activities.
  • Perform other duties as required, such as checking patient records for incomplete data and relaying messages to staff personnel.
  • Specific duties may vary depending on assignment.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to work effectively with the public.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sterile technique.
  • Consistently demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior, culturally sensitive service to members, contractors, and vendors.
  • Ability to give and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Vocational Nurse License (California) required.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Additional Requirements

  • 8‑hour position with variable hours (6 : 30 AM‑7 : 30 PM).
  • May be required to float to other central locations.
  • Weekend shifts required.
  • National City, CA $40.00‑$42.00
