Job description

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The EHS Coordinator reports directly to the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Leader at the Houston Roofing & Asphalt Plant. The position collaborates with leadership and plant team members to promote a proactive safety culture and maintain an effective, compliant safety process.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Plant and Environmental Safety

  • Live by the Owens Corning Safety Standard and meet all safety requirements. Safety is a condition of employment.
  • Take personal ownership of safety and encourage team members to adhere to high safety standards.
  • Immediately notify a supervisor of any accidents, near misses, or injuries, regardless of perceived severity.
  • Participate in safety, quality, autonomous maintenance, TPM, and housekeeping programs, including Focused Improvement Events, Safety Committee, and Training.
  • Perform tasks to reduce environmental impact, complying with environmental regulations and recycling procedures.
  • Follow all plant rules and safety regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness at workstations and equipment.
  • Communicate safety concerns and equipment issues promptly to appropriate personnel, ensuring immediate action.
  • Inspect vehicles before and during shifts, maintaining cleanliness and operational status.

TPM

  • Engage in plant TPM initiatives, completing associated tasks such as CILT standards and 5S.
  • Use TPM methodology to better understand equipment.
  • Identify learning opportunities and develop expertise.
  • Apply Focus Improvement tools for problem-solving.
  • Aim for zero injuries, defects, and losses.
  • Use PM days effectively to optimize equipment condition.
  • Assist in teaching about DM and Step Boards.
  • Safety

  • Conduct floor inspections for hazards and communicate with employees.
  • Support operators and maintenance with new or modified processes and equipment.
  • Perform safety audits and monitor compliance.
  • Collect and submit samples for testing (nuclear, wastewater, stormwater, noise, etc.).
  • Lead hazard assessments and assist with risk mitigation.
  • Lead incident investigations and develop corrective actions.
  • Coordinate safety cards, hazard hunts, and work orders.
  • Perform assessments, inspections, audits, and investigations (e.g., SPCC, SWPPP, VPP, LTT, Contractor, Safe Work, Guarding, Arc Flash).
  • Support and / or administer first aid and maintain relevant certifications.
  • Maintain EH&S tracking tools and communicate safety information regularly.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs and evaluate vendor and contractor compliance.
  • Provide safety orientations for visitors, contractors, and new hires, including assessments.
  • Manage certification / license statuses.
  • Lead behavior-based safety programs and track permits.
  • Coordinate health programs (vaccinations, exams, ergonomic assessments).
  • Develop, review, and communicate safety policies.
  • Manage inventory of PPE and safety items.
  • Review MSDS for new chemicals.
  • Monitor safety metrics to promote continuous improvement.
  • Lead safety committees, VPP teams, and JHA / RCA / SOP activities.
  • Environmental

  • Assist with data collection and reporting for stormwater, waste, Tier II, TRI, emissions, GACT, etc.
  • Monitor programs like GACT, Title V, and conduct inspections (stormwater, spill prevention).
  • Review and maintain environmental permits and documentation.
  • Perform tank LEL monitoring and other environmental tasks as assigned.

  • Communicate effectively and support colleague development.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and follow SOPs.
  • Make informed decisions within the chain of command.
  • Maintain regular on-site attendance and work rotating shifts as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • JOB REQUIREMENTS

    Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least 3 years of EHS experience.
  • Preferred certifications : OSHA 30 and Visible Emissions Method 9.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective communication across all employee levels.
  • Ability to interpret technical manuals and specifications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Maintain necessary certifications and training skills.
  • Facilitate various training formats and manage Learning Management System.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently and in teams.
  • Visual acuity for readings and diagrams.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and TPM methodology.
  • Experience in CI and creating Standard Work.
  • Physical Requirements / Work Environment

    The employee should possess the ability to :

  • Remain drug-free.
  • Work in dusty, dirty, or fume-filled environments, including fiberglass exposure.
  • Work in wet conditions and extreme temperatures.
  • Handle noise levels requiring hearing protection.
  • Wear PPE for extended periods.
  • Distinguish colors and shades.
  • Operate a forklift after certification.
  • Perform prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, and repetitive movements.
  • Work at heights and lift up to 40 lbs repeatedly.
  • Work flexible shifts with mandatory overtime.
