Position Overview : We are actively seeking two dedicated and experienced ER Night Managers to provide 24-hour management coverage for our Emergency Department. These full-time roles are pivotal in ensuring efficient operations, fostering staff accountability, and upholding the highest standards of patient care and safety during night shifts. The ideal candidates will thrive in a dynamic, high-volume environment and align with a supportive, servant leadership philosophy.

Primary Responsibilities :

The Night Managers will be responsible for holding staff accountable for their performance and overseeing a team of 260 FTEs and 40 travelers, ensuring efficient staffing through a new flow process. They will provide strong leadership and support to a highly engaged nursing staff and physician crew. A critical component of the role is maintaining 24-hour management coverage through a unique "seven days on, seven days off" schedule. The managers are expected to mentor and teach new managers essential skills, including productivity management, budget oversight, and understanding EBITDA. Additionally, they will contribute significantly to the hospital's ongoing advancements in patient safety and patient care, engage with medical directors and physicians on various projects, and actively participate in the unit-based council.

Key Qualifications and Skills :

Candidates should embody a transformational servant leader style, demonstrating support, a non-micromanaging approach, and a commitment to staff development. Reliability and a deep understanding of their responsibilities are crucial. A genuine passion for patient interaction and being a strong team player is highly valued. While financial acumen is teachable, a willingness to learn about budget management, EBITDA, and financial definitions is expected. Previous formal management experience is preferred; Assistant Nurse Managers with experience from other facilities are strongly encouraged to apply. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is generally required, with a Master's degree preferred but not mandatory.

Team and Reporting Structure :

The Night Managers will be integral to the ED management team, which includes the Director and four managers (including these two night managers), an ED tech coordinator, and an admin assistant. Trauma services are managed separately. The department boasts 260 FTEs. The team also benefits from three dedicated educators, a medical director, and seven assistant medical directors. Two charge nurses are present on each shift. These positions will report directly to the Director of Nursing. Collaboration will be essential with the highly engaged nursing staff and physician crew, the trauma program manager and abstractors, the department's educators, and the finance department for ongoing training.

Key Priorities in the First Six Months :

The top priorities for the new Night Managers in the initial six months include strengthening staff accountability to maintain performance standards and efficient unit operation. A significant focus will be on team support and development, where new managers will receive comprehensive training in productivity, budget, and higher finance levels, aligning with the Directors transformational servant leadership style. Additionally, effectively managing the unique "seven days on, seven days off" schedule to ensure consistent 24-hour management coverage and seamless transitions will be paramount.

Challenges and Opportunities :

The unique "seven days on, seven days off" work schedule offers an opportunity for candidates seeking extended time off, such as 22 days off when used in combination with 80 hours of PTO, but may also present a challenge for those preferring a traditional work week.

The role operates within a high-paced, demanding environment due to an anticipated 101,000 ED visits and 3,500 trauma cases annually. Candidates will be involved in the final stages of hiring and training to achieve 100% staffing. The organization is experiencing dynamic changes with a new, highly engaged CNO and director crew, and an incoming CEO with an appetite for change.

KPIs for Success :

Success in this role will be measured by the effective implementation of strategies that promote staff accountability. Demonstrated ability in productivity management, including understanding and impacting financial metrics like EBITDA, is crucial. Contribution to a highly engaged nursing staff and physician crew, which may positively influence RN vacancy rates and reduce traveler dependency, is a key indicator. Alignment with the hospital's commitment to patient safety and care, alongside successful mentoring and training of charge nurses and other staff, reflecting the Directors servant leadership style, will define achievement.

Compensation and Benefits :

The salary for the Night Manager position ranges from $59 to $89 per hour, commensurate with experience. The schedule offers flexibility, with a full-time 40-hour work week structured as "seven days on, seven days off."

This schedule provides extended personal time or the option to pursue a second job. Opportunities for professional development include tuition reimbursement of up to $10,000 per year for a Master's degree, training sessions on productivity and financial management provided by the Director of Nursing and the finance department, involvement in various projects within the teaching hospital setting, and active participation in the unit-based council.
