Job Overview
We’re seeking a strategic, detail-oriented Environmental Policy Professional to support development of policies in the areas of extended producer responsibility and provide indirect compliance support to member companies, which are home appliance manufacturers across North America. This collaborative role sits within a close-knit team of Regulatory Affairs, Government Affairs, and other teams.
You will help support member companies anticipate trends and provide indirect compliance support for an ever-increasingly complex set of regulatory and legislative requirements related to waste management. You will work together with a cross-functional team and engage with a variety of external stakeholders.
The ideal candidate is a team player who is collegial, pragmatic, technically knowledgeable, and able to research and translate complex policies through writing and orally to internal and external audiences. Primary Duties & Responsibilities
1. Government Affairs and Legal– 25%
- Monitor regulatory developments and collaborate with cross-functional teams to shape proactive policy.
- Serve as the internal expert on compliance strategy during legislative and regulatory initiatives.
- Host regular industry update calls and represent AHAM at regulatory hearings and advisory sessions.
- Attend and provide testimony at regulatory or legislative meetings as required.
- Support lobbying efforts of legislative and executive branches related to Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) programs, coordinating with cross-functional team and other stakeholders.
- Provide technical expertise in support of any necessary litigation.
- Cultivate stakeholder relations with other producers’ groups.
2. Research & Analysis– 25%
Contribute to policy development by providing expert insights on extended producer responsibility, advance recycling fees, pre-disposal fees, end of life waste, and circular economy.Analyze regulatory and other reports, studies, and data with clear, concise summaries in writing and presentations.3.Stakeholder Engagement & Public Representation – 25%
Represent AHAM at industry consortiums, regulatory forums, and trade events, fostering visibility and influence.Develop and maintain relationships with certification bodies, regulators, PROs (e.g., Circular Action Alliance), and NGO partners.Participate in PRO / EPR advisory boards, regularly brief AHAM members on PRO activity and sector trends.Engage with other producer groups and alliances to share best practices and align policy positions.Collaborate with and serve as a point-of-contact for member companies on issues concerning supply chain circularity, EPR compliance, and end-of-life product initiatives.Support outreach efforts and build coalitions to amplify industry-wide sustainability objectives.Support work within AHAM and with member companies to develop public communications surrounding industry packaging compliance and end-of-life initiatives.4. Compliance Monitoring & Performance Reporting – 25%
Develop and update best-practice guides for AHAM members.Coordinate calls with Producers Responsibility Organizations (PROs) and trade associations as key reporting deadlines are published.Curate a resource hub database of EPR specialists and compliance consultants to support member companies’ operational compliance needs.Deliver weekly regulatory summaries and trend analyses to members, ensuring clarity around rulemaking, data requirements, and evolving obligations.Core Competencies

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy or related, or equivalent experience2-4 years in recycling or waste public policyExperience in U.S. and Canadian regulations at agencies such as U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Environment& Climate Change Canada and familiarity with recycling / waste policy (EPR) and ability to understand the technical requirements associated with recycling and waste management. Demonstrated knowledge of environmental policy issues, preferably in the appliance industry.Proven track record of cross-functional collaboration, influencing standards or legislation, and communicating complex issues clearly.Demonstrated ability to analyze and communicate complex issues and data to public policy makers and others without experience in the issue area.Proficiency with compliance systems, certification processes, and regulatory reporting toolsDetailed-oriented with strong analytical skills to interpret data, statutes, and manage technical requirements around EPR and packaging.Adaptable and effective in fast-paced, politically influenced environments, engaging in issue management and stakeholder outreach.Experience in communicating (in written, verbal, or other form) clearly, concisely and effectively to diverse audiences.
