Position Summary
The Shift Manager is responsible for ensuring the safe, supportive, and effective operation of the 24 / 7 emergency shelter during their assigned shift. Serving as the on-site lead, the Shift Manager provides supervision, coaching, and guidance to shelter staff, oversees daily operations, and responds to urgent matters as they arise. This role emphasizes teamwork and strong communication between the two Shift Managers to ensure seamless coverage and consistent services for residents.
In addition to operational oversight, the Shift Manager carries a small caseload to provide direct support to survivors, ensuring trauma-informed, client-centered services. The role requires strong crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to maintain a safe, respectful, and healing environment for residents and staff.
Essential Duties
Shelter Operations & SupervisionServe as the on-site lead during assigned shifts, providing direction, guidance, and support to shelter staff.Supervise daily operations, including staff coverage, scheduling adjustments, and ensuring smooth shift transitions.Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance support to shelter staff; escalate performance concerns to the DOSS as needed.Uphold shelter policies, procedures, and processes; provide training and reinforcement for staff.Respond promptly to urgent situations, exercising sound judgment in collaboration with security staff and leadership as appropriate.Communicate regularly with the other Shift Manager to ensure consistency and continuity of operations across shifts.Resident Support & Case ManagementCarry a small caseload of shelter residents to provide individualized support, advocacy, and referrals.Employ trauma-informed, survivor-centered approaches to crisis intervention and case management.Support residents in developing safety plans, connecting with community resources, and working toward self-identified goals.Model conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies, and guide staff in responding effectively to resident needs.Administrative & CommunicationMaintain accurate documentation of incidents, case notes, and shift activities.Participate in team meetings, supervision, and case reviews with DOSS.Collaborate closely with the other Shift Manager to ensure seamless communication, including written handoffs and regular coordination.Assist in ongoing review and improvement of shelter operations and procedures to ensure the highest quality of services.Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.Minimum of 2 years' experience in residential, shelter, or crisis services setting.Prior supervisory or lead staff experience strongly preferred.Demonstrated skills in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and trauma-informed care.Strong organizational, communication, and leadership abilities.Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, residents, and external partners.Proficiency in documentation, basic administrative tasks, and use of technology systems.Work Environment & Physical Demands
On-site position in a 24 / 7 emergency shelter environment.Frequent interaction with individuals in crisis or under stress.Requires ability to respond quickly to emergencies and navigate multiple priorities simultaneously.Moderate physical activity including standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs).What We Offer
Competitive Pay : $60,000 - $70,000 starting salary range. Salary is negotiable. Full-time exempt position.
