Description :
Unit notes indicate that housing is very difficult with pets.
The staff must seek special housing finds prior to placement.
Preferred experience includes managing IABP and Impella.
The nurse-to-patient ratio is generally 1 RN to 2 patients, sometimes 1 : 1.
The ICU also takes overflow from PCU and medical / surgical patients.
When caring for overflow patients, the ratio may be 3-5 : 1 based on CNA availability.
Common patient diagnoses include general medical / surgical critical care, STEMI, pneumonia, COVID, DKA, CVA, ETOH, and overdose.
RNs are required to titrate drips.
Common titratable and set rate drips include Precedex, insulin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and propofol.
Charge nurses are on the unit and take patients as needed.
The unit may have nurse aides available, depending on patient mix and staff availability.
A hospitalist is in-house 24 / 7, while an intensivist is available by page but not continuously on-site.
Respiratory therapy is available in the ICU 24 / 7.
Equipment used in the ICU includes V60s, BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow nasal cannula.
There is a central monitoring unit staffed with a monitor technician at all times.
There are additional monitor technicians staffing the ICU and PCU 24 / 7.
RNs are responsible for reading strips and verifying measurements and interpretations made by monitor technicians.
Shifts are 12 hours, from 0545 to 1815 and 1745 to 0615.
Scheduling for travelers is variable, depending on departmental needs.
Weekend requirements typically involve working every other weekend, but this may vary.
Holiday requirements are also applicable.
There is no call or standby requirement.
Nurses will float to the adjacent PCU unit.
The dress code is clean and professional looking.
Unit and departmental specific orientation typically involve 1-2 shifts, depending on experience.
Preferred experience includes a minimum of 2.5-3 years in ICU, though first-time travel assignments may be considered with acceptable experience.
The cancellation policy allows for a variable number of hours canceled depending on the length of the contract.
The charting system in use is an electronic medical record system.
