About the Role

The University of Virginia Financial Operations organization is seeking a Senior Tax Analyst or Tax Analyst. Commensurate with the candidate's experience, the role will be filled at either the Senior Tax Analyst or the Tax Analyst level.

To support the University's compliance with tax laws and reporting obligations related to educational and research activities. The role plays a vital part in ensuring accurate tax treatment of payments made to international individuals and entities across the University's Academic Division, Medical Center and College at Wise. The Tax Analyst will also assist with other University tax functions including sales tax, value added tax, unrelated business income tax, and individual income reporting statements.

Reporting to the Director of Financial Operations, the Tax Analyst will :

• Monitor and record taxable payments to foreign nationals for tax implications.
• Determine tax residency status and ensure proper reporting (e.g., Form 1042-S and Form 1042).
• Collaborate with University Payroll to ensure accurate tax withholdings on wage payments to foreign national employees.
• Serve as a resource to departments and international students, providing guidance on complex tax and immigration-related questions.
• Assist the Tax Manager and Director of Financial Operations with other tax filings and reporting responsibilities as necessary.

This role requires a high level of customer service and the ability to translate complex tax and immigration issues into understandable guidance for diverse stakeholders.

Review Payments to Foreign Nationals

Prepare and submit IRS Form 1042-S and Form 1042

Assist Foreign Nationals with U.S. Tax Questions

Provide Support to Payroll Department

Assist with other tax reporting requirements.

Required Interpersonal competencies :

Anticipated Hiring Range : $70,000 to $90,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. Specific compensation will be dependent on which role the candidate is hired into along with the candidate's qualifications.
