Job description

The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD  (“The HARRIS CENTER”) is looking for a Forensic Psychologist III to join our team. Under the direction of the lead forensic psychologist for the Competency and Sanity Evaluation Unit, as the Forensic Psychologist, your primary responsibility will be to conduct thorough forensic psychological evaluations of defendants as ordered by the court, providing expert opinions to Harris County criminal courts on matters of competency to stand trial and insanity. You'll be tasked with providing written opinions, consulting with attorneys and court officials, and testifying in criminal legal proceedings as required. Additionally, you'll be responsible for completing routine administrative and record-keeping activities as necessary to maintain accurate and up-to-date records of your work. This role offers an exciting opportunity to apply your expertise in forensic psychology to make a meaningful impact on the criminal justice system.

Your role in action :

  • Conducts competency and sanity evaluations and other court ordered evaluations completing written reports within required timeframe and provides court testimony relating to evaluation results as requested.
  • Effectively interacts with judges, attorneys and other court staff in the collection of information and collaboration on assigned cases.
  • Conducts psychological testing and provides documentation of findings from assessment instruments.
  • Meets divisional productivity standards.
  • Demonstrates ethical conduct in all clinical and professional activities.
  • Performs related work as assigned. Adapts to changing work requirements.
  • Complies with agency policies and procedures, accrediting / regulatory bodies and performance contract documentation requirements.
  • Communicates and works with consumers / visitors / other staff in a manner that demonstrates sensitivity to cultural diversities.

What qualifications you will need :

Education :

  • Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) or equivalent in Psychology.
  • Licensed as a psychologist in the State of Texas.
  • Board Certification by the American Board of Professional Psychology as a Forensic Psychologist is preferred.
  • Experience :

  • Board Certified as Forensic Psychologist :
  • Minimum of ten (10) years experience conducting clinical / psychological assessments of individuals with mental illness for courts.At least five(5) years of clinical experience post-licensure working in the field of mental health.
  • If candidate is not Board Certified as a Forensic Psychologist :

  • at least 24 hours of specialized training in Forensic Psychology.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities :

  • Knowledge of psychological assessment / competency and sanity evaluation tools.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic criteria, specific clinical features and guidelines for formulating a diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of court requirements for competency and sanity evaluations.
