Job Description :

  • Schedule : Varies, mostly weekends

The Part-Time Academic Coach for English as a Second Language is responsible for providing individual and small group tutoring in reading, writing and / or study strategies for ESL students as well as those in the general student population, as needed. Individual will provide individual tutoring for learners, participate and plan workshops for improving reading, writing, or study strategies for ESL students, design and facilitate ESL tutoring in reading and writing; and report to the Dean for Puerto Rico Campus while consulting with the Director of Hatch Learning Commons (Longmeadow, MA), as needed.

The Part-Time Academic Coach is responsible for meeting with students to :

  • Assist in improving academic achievement.
  • Develop general college level study skills and academic self-management.
  • Review class material, discuss readings, provide tools to predict test questions.
  • Formulate ideas for papers, or work on solutions to homework problems.
  • Maintain familiarity with subject-area specific course content and syllabi.
  • Assist students with understanding course content.
  • Review student work and provide feedback and recommendations for improvement.
  • Track weekly utilization by content area.
  • Attend new student orientation upon request.
  • Attend training as required.
  • Perform other managerial, administrative, or supervisory duties as assigned.
  • Create and facilitate biweekly workshops or conversation labs.
  • Contribute to the design of flyers, email, and other media to promote Writing / ESL coaching services.
  • Requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts or Education with emphasis on ESL required.
  • Successful candidate must have a willingness and ability to tutor grammar, reading, writing, and conversation from beginning to advanced levels, as well as general study skills and strategies.
  • One year of ESL experience required; ESL Certification and experience tutoring university level ESL students preferred.
  • Availability to work evenings.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills.
  • Able to work effectively in both an independent and team environment.
  • Detail oriented with excellent follow-up and organizational skills.
  • Must project a positive, professional image.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and to adhere to FERPA and HIPPA guidelines.
  • Proven interpersonal skills and ability to work with academically at risk and diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build working relationships with people having a wide variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
  • Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.
