Responsibilities
The Medical Assistant (MA) in the Mayo Clinic Oncology Department plays a vital and dynamic role, encompassing a broad range of responsibilities. This position requires a highly adaptable individual who is cross-trained to perform both front-office and back-office duties, contributing significantly to patient care and clinic operations. This role offers a degree of autonomy, with Medical Assistants working independently at times, alongside a supportive team environment. Please note that this position does not involve assisting with specialized procedures.
Key Responsibilities :
Perform phone triage, assessing patient needs and directing calls appropriately.
Retrieve and manage patient records, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
Assist patients with FMLA paperwork, providing necessary documentation and support.
Administer injections as directed by clinical staff.
Room patients, prepare them for examinations, and gather initial patient information.
Process prescription refills efficiently and accurately.
Manage genomic testing requisitions, ensuring all necessary steps are followed.
Work independently on assigned tasks while also collaborating effectively as part of the healthcare team.
Medical Assistants in the Oncology Clinic are cross-trained.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Graduate from a Medical Assistant diploma or associate degree program or hold an active Medical Assistant certification (CMA), or registration (RMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification. Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency. Active Medical Assistant certification (CMA), or registration (RMA) or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) is preferred. Experience in an Oncology setting is preferred.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Experience working in a team environment. Computer proficiency required, including prior experience with electronic medical record systems. Ability to work daytime hours, flexibility may be required to meet staffing needs. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
