This recruitment is being conducted as an Open / Promotional recruitment. Under general supervision, plans, assigns, organizes, directs, and reviews the work of a crew of Maintenance Repair Technicians and Alternative Work Program participants engaged in street maintenance; street cleaning work; traffic painting and sign work; and parking meter repair; performs the work as required; performs related duties as assigned.
This is the lead level class in this series, providing direction to a crew who is performing a variety of duties including street maintenance, street cleaning, maintenance of traffic signs and markings, and parking meter repairs. This class is distinguished from Public Works Supervisor, which is a first-line supervisory position responsible for the work of several such crews.
Principal duties (illustrative only) :
Plans, organizes, assigns, directs, and reviews the work of various crews, including Alternative Work Program participants, engaged in street cleaning, graffiti removal, street maintenance, traffic maintenance work, and parking meter repair; performs the work as required.Directs and / or performs the most skilled duties as required; provides technical assistance to crew members; instructs crew in work procedures and safe work practices; troubleshoots equipment problems.Estimates and secures tools, materials, and equipment required for assigned jobs; discusses work to be performed with supervisors; assigns tasks to individuals at the work site.Monitors and performs work in progress at the job site; directs corrections and modifications as appropriate; evaluates job performance.Maintains records of work performed and materials used; records as-built drawings of modifications; prepares a variety of written records and reports related to the work; enters and retrieves computer-based data.Reads and interprets plans, schematics, blueprints, manuals, and specifications.Directs and / or performs complex inspections, maintenance, adjustments and repairs of parking meters and stands.Measures and lays out, in the field, traffic channelization (center lines, lane lines, islands, etc.), intersection markings (stop bars, crosswalks, etc.), and all pavement legends (arrows, word messages, etc.); places painting and safety equipment at the job site in conformance to established standards and procedures.Mixes paints; performs and assists in painting traffic markings, colored curbs, guards, barricades, and bars on pavement; installs reflectors and other devices.Repairs and installs various traffic signs assuring compliance with standards established by the State of California Department of Transportation; removes damaged signs.Uses and directs the use and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power, and shop tools, test equipment, and other equipment related to the work; operates trucks and equipment, including heavy equipment.Observes safe work methods and ensures the use of safety equipment and precautions related to the work being performed; conducts tailgate safety meetings; secures work site from traffic and other hazards; assists in developing training programs.Coordinates work assignments with other divisions; responds to questions and requests as appropriate.Inspects contract work to ensure compliance with specifications; recommends corrective actions as necessary.Responds to public inquiries and complaints verbally and in writing.Performs special projects as assigned.Responds to emergency calls in off-hours as required.Qualifications :
Education / experience :
Possession of a high school diploma or GED and either two years experience in traffic signs and markings, including maintenance of parking meters; or two years of experience in street maintenance and construction, Alternative Work Program supervision / graffiti removal at a level equivalent to the City's Maintenance Repair Technician II or Public Works Heavy Equipment Operator classes. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in all areas.
Other requirements :
Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license. Possession of a valid California Class A driver's license with endorsements T and N is desirable.Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds and to perform sustained heavy physical labor.Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to work overtime or off-hours in emergency situations.Must be willing to work in confined spaces and with exposure to traffic and / or potentially hazardous substances.Knowledge of :
