Job description

Overview

Position : Risk Management Consultant, Department : Risk Management. FTE : 1.00. Schedule : Days. This role leads and facilitates meetings, guides discussions, and influences stakeholders at all levels. It directs and achieves change through collaboration with partner departments, timely communication, and completion of action plans related to clinical risk management initiatives. The incumbent acts as a facilitator for assigned initiatives, ensures completion of RCAs (root cause analyses) and related action plans in coordination with appropriate departments, and tracks RCA data. Provides clinical risk consultation to hospital leaders and medical staff as needed. Manages multiple complex risk management investigations, including institution-wide RCA processes, and prepares RCAs to meet organizational needs. Communicates clinical risk management information and recommendations to clinical staff, management, and leadership, and maintains ongoing communication with clinical risk partners (e.g., Patient Advocate, Quality Outcomes, Security, Nursing, Medical Staff, Office of University Counsel). Collaborates across the organization to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate protocols, patient care policies and procedures, and standards of care through various clinical risk processes, including RCAs, quality committees, and clinical risk initiatives. Provides training and education on clinical risk management principles, best practices, and relevant regulations or standards. This role does not involve direct patient care.

Responsibilities

  • LEADERSHIP - Plan, direct and manage programs and activities related to organizational and departmental clinical risk.
  • LEADERSHIP - Direct and achieve change through others with partner departments, timely communication, and action plans related to clinical risk management.
  • LEADERSHIP - Lead and facilitate meetings, guide discussions, and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • CLINICAL RISK ID, MGMT & MITIGATION - Apply performance and process improvement (PPI) and change management methods to support clinical risk management initiatives and patient safety.
  • CLINICAL RISK ID, MGMT & MITIGATION - Identify and review patient safety events for sentinel / never events or other clinical risk management to determine potential interventions.
  • CLINICAL RISK ID, MGMT & MITIGATION - Develop potential strategic clinical risk initiatives through RCA criteria and process improvement to facilitate implementation of strategic initiatives.
  • CLINICAL RISK ID, MGMT & MITIGATION - Analyze data, identify trends, and collaborate with departments to develop effective solutions.
  • CLINICAL RISK CONSULTATION - Provide clinical risk consultation to hospital and medical staff as needed and assist in management and reporting of events to leadership and staff.
  • PROJECT COORDINATION - Manage multiple complex risk management investigations and RCAs; integrate with Health Sciences Center risk management.
  • PROJECT COORDINATION - Lead and facilitate meetings, guide discussions, and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • PROJECT COORDINATION - Lead the review of serious occurrences including sentinel / never events requiring RCA or FMEA.
  • PROJECT COORDINATION - Review preventable adverse events and initiate investigations as required.
  • PROJECT COORDINATION - Conduct RCAs for incidents meeting criteria and disseminate lessons learned and process improvement plans across the organization.
  • COMMUNICATION AND ALIGNMENT - Inform and involve leaders of sentinel / never events and communicate risk management information to stakeholders.
  • COLLABORATION - Participate in organizational quality initiatives and committees to improve quality, safety, and reduce risk; collaborate on development of protocols and standards of care.
  • COLLABORATION - Work with Clinical Risk Management team to achieve objectives.
  • SKILLS APPLICATION AND DEVELOPMENT - Provide training on clinical risk management principles and applicable standards; stay informed on regulations and best practices.
  • SKILLS APPLICATION AND DEVELOPMENT - Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication and collaboration across diverse teams.
  • SKILLS APPLICATION AND DEVELOPMENT - Pursue professional growth through educational programs and industry resources.

Qualifications

Education

  • Essential : Bachelor's Degree
  • Nonessential : Master's Degree
  • Education specialization

  • Related Discipline
  • Experience

  • Essential : 5 years directly related hospital and / or clinical experience, preferably with supervisory or leadership role; experience leading teams / individuals and managing changing priorities.
  • Nonessential : No preferred experience
  • Credentials

  • Essential : NM RN or Licensed Clinical Professional in State of NM
  • Nonessential : ASHRM certification
  • Working conditions

  • Physical : Sedentary work with occasional lifting up to 10 pounds; mostly sitting with occasional walking / standing.
  • Environment : No or minimal hazards; office setting.
