Facilities Custodian

The City of Tukwila is seeking a Facilities Custodian to perform routine custodial to minor facilities maintenance activities. The Facilities Division of the Public Works Department is actively seeking an individual who is punctual, a self-starter, and able to work independently. Under the supervision of the Facilities Superintendent, the Facilities Custodian will be part of a team maintaining office buildings throughout the City and the Tukwila Community Center totaling up to 150,000 sq. ft of space.

The City of Tukwila is 9.6 square miles of opportunity and a dynamic place to work. The population is over 22,000 at night and up to 150,000+ during the day. Tukwila shares borders with the Cities of Seattle, Renton, SeaTac, Burien, and Kent. Its central location lies in the heart of the Puget Sound region, sitting 12 miles south of downtown Seattle, 17 miles north of downtown Tacoma, and just east of SeaTac Airport. It is easily accessed by I-5 and I-405 or via either of Tukwila's two train stations, the Sounder Station or the Sound Transit Light Rail Station.

The mission of the Facility Maintenance unit is to preserve all buildings through a preventive maintenance, repair, and operating program to provide a safe, pleasant and productive work environment for City staff and clients. The work is located in thirty-eight facilities throughout the City, consisting of approximately 233,633 square feet, of which 149,957 square feet is provided with custodial care. Facilities maintained consist of the main City Hall (6200 Building), the 6300 Building, a large community center, library, four fire stations, Minkler, George Long, and Golf maintenance facilities, several public restrooms, and various other buildings.

Please note : The schedule for this position is Sunday through Thursday from 12 : 00 am (midnight) to 8 : 00 am, and is represented by the Teamsters, Local #763.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cleans and services City buildings and related facilities, including furnishings. Reports needed facility repairs for action.
  • Cleans and disinfects restrooms and replenishes supplies.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture and removes trash.
  • Mops, sweeps, strips, waxes, polishes, shampoos, buffs, and / or vacuums all floors, carpets, furniture, etc. using a variety of equipment to include carpet extractor, auto-scrubber, genie lift, shampoo machine, etc.
  • Washes interior / exterior windows, mirrors, walls, metal, and woodwork.
  • Changes light bulbs and related fixtures.
  • Climbing ladders and working on boom lift.
  • May set-up and take down furniture for rental groups.
  • Maintains supply inventory.
  • Responds to non-routine situations such as chemical release in City facilities, facility alarms, and / or fire / storm watches.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned custodial equipment such as carpet extractor, auto-scrubber, vacuum, and small tools for proper operating condition.
  • Maintains reasonable, predictable, and regular attendance during the standard work week.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry) : Equipment, supplies, chemicals, and cleaners used to clean buildings and furnishings, to include applicable safety precautions, maintenance, and repairs; and Alarm systems.

SKILLS (position requirements at entry) : Using equipment and tools properly and safely; Applying customer service techniques; Using computers and related software and cell phones; Establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels and with the public; and Communication, both oral and written, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Education, Experience and Other Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • And one year of commercial custodial experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • First aid and CPR certification must be successfully completed within six months of hire.
  • Must be fingerprinted and pass a background check prior to hire.
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings.
  • PHYSICAL ACTIVITY / REQUIREMENTS : Positions in this class typically require : stooping; kneeling; crouching; reaching; climbing; pushing; pulling; twisting; mopping; operating machinery; exposure to odors, fumes, chemicals, solvents, and dust; mobility; grasping; hearing; seeing; and repetitive motions. Medium Work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Some positions may require greater exertion in moving objects.
