Position Summary
The Coding Manager is responsible for overseeing all medical coding operations at the Medical Center to ensure accurate, compliant, and timely coding of inpatient, outpatient, clinic, and professional services. This role leads and supports the coding team, ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, and collaborates with clinical, billing, and revenue cycle teams to optimize reimbursement and data integrity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Manage day-to-day operations of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and professional coding functions
Supervise, train, mentor, and evaluate coding staff, including productivity and quality performance
Ensure accurate assignment of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes in accordance with official guidelines
Monitor coding quality through regular audits and implement corrective action plans as needed
Ensure compliance with CMS, Medicare, Medicaid, OIG, and other regulatory requirements
Serve as a subject matter expert for coding guidelines, reimbursement methodologies, and documentation requirements
Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI), billing, compliance, and revenue cycle teams to resolve coding-related issues
Analyze coding trends, denial patterns, and reimbursement opportunities and recommend process improvements
Maintain policies and procedures related to coding practices and ensure consistent application
Assist with preparation for internal and external audits, including RAC, MAC, and payer audits
Monitor and manage coding productivity standards and turnaround times
Stay current with changes in coding regulations, payer rules, and industry best practices
Participate in system upgrades, EHR optimization, and coding-related implementations
Education and Experience
Associate's degree in Health Information Management or related field required
Bachelor's degree preferred
Minimum of 5 years of hospital coding experience required
Prior supervisory or management experience strongly preferred
Experience in critical access or rural hospital settings preferred
Required Certifications
One or more of the following required :
RHIA or RHIT
CCS or CCS-P
CPC (with hospital coding experience)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
Strong understanding of DRGs, APCs, and reimbursement methodologies
Proven leadership, coaching, and team-building skills
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, clinicians, and administrative staff
Proficiency with EHR systems and encoder software
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment
