The Arlington County Commissioner of Revenue's Office is seeking a Tax Auditor IV to join the Business Tax Audit team to perform complex financial audit investigations of major businesses operating within Arlington County, including Fortune 1000 corporations, high-profile technology and defense contractors, healthcare providers, universities, and emerging start-ups.
This position serves as a technical expert and reliable resource to staff, providing guidance on complex cases that require advanced analysis or supervisory review. The Business Tax Audit section is responsible for identifying business tax discrepancies, conducting financial tax audits, and ensuring compliance with all applicable state statutes and County ordinances. Auditors educate and collaborate with businesses to ensure the accurate application of Virginia and Arlington tax codes and to promote voluntary compliance through clear communication and thorough investigative practices.

The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and project management skills, with the ability to interpret and apply complex tax laws and financial data accurately. They will be highly organized, capable of managing multiple audit projects simultaneously, and effective in communicating technical financial information both verbally and in writing. A successful candidate will demonstrate advanced knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws, proficiency in financial and managerial accounting, and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams to drive accuracy and efficiency in audit operations.

Minimum Qualifications :
Substitution : Progressively responsible tax investigation / auditing experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for the educational requirement.

Background Check : A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following : criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driver's License : Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant's driving record. Alternatively, the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.

Additional Information
Work hours : Full-Time, Monday through Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m., with telework opportunities available upon supervisor approval. The individual in this position should be prepared to initially spend most of their work hours on-site at the Commissioner's office in Arlington and would be eligible for hybrid work in the future as appropriate. Participation in meetings, field visits, conferences and professional development training will require in person attendance.
