Veterinary Technician
POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Summary :
The Veterinary Technician II position is responsible for daily care of all Alaska SPCA surgical patients during our high volume spay / neuter days and procedure days. Assisting with pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients, outpatient veterinary care, general cleaning. This position works closely with customers, clinic veterinarians, other veterinary technicians, and customer service staff.
Essential Job Duties :
Assist receptionists with triage and incoming patientsPerform "pre-exams" on incoming patients and gather brief medical historiesPerform laboratory tests and take radiographsAbility to draw blood and place IV cathetersHandle, calculate and track controlled substances for large volumes of surgical patientsEffectively pre-medicate, induce, intubate, all patients as necessaryMonitor anesthesia, recognize and respond effectively and safely to abnormalitiesPerform treatments and administer medications as directedDispense medications per doctor's ordersAble to glove and assist in surgery as needed using proper aseptic techniqueEffectively run a surgical team and maintain organization of surgical flow when appropriateHandle medical calls when neededEnsure prompt and accurate paperwork procedures are followed each dayCommunicate with clients / owners about status of patients as directed by the veterinarianParticipate in client education on the health of their petsKnowledge and ability to intake and release patients, including delivering post-operative instructions in a competent and friendly mannerAble to respond appropriately during an emergency, able to take directions from a veterinarian and direct others during the event, and maintain competency during CPR proceduresEffectively assist in training of Veterinary Assisting and Veterinary Technician I staffParticipate in all staff and technician mandatory meetingsDuties may include but are not limited to checking patients in, collecting deposits and payments, answering client questions in person, on the telephone, and via emailHelping to keep the hospital clean, doing laundry, cleaning cages, etc.Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating proceduresCommunicate with clients and assist with rechecks as neededMust exhibit professionalism in behavior and performance at all times by :Maintaining excellent interpersonal relationship skills in dealing with coworkers
Communicating in an effective and professional manner with customers and coworkersRepresent the Alaska SPCA in a professional and courteous manner at all timesOther duties as assigned by supervisorPreferred Skills / Abilities :

High school diploma or equivalentTwo years experience working as a vet techPreferred Qualifications :
Licensed Veterinary TechnicianVeterinary technician experienceKnowledge of veterinary clinic procedures and terminologies as directedKnowledge of companion animal welfare issues and sterilizationPhysical Requirements :
Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of timeMust be able to move / lift up to 50 pounds at timeFrequent bending and standing throughout the dayJob Status :
