Description :

The SICU population is specialized.

It includes trauma patients and CV surgery patients, such as those recovering from TAVRs and CABGs.

Patients recovering from neurosurgery and other complicated surgical cases are also included.

Required skills include interpretation and management of dysrhythmias.

Arterial line management and blood product administration are essential.

Common diagnoses include acute ventilator need, high O2 demand cases, DKA, severe sepsis, unstable GI bleeds, and trauma cases.

The unit can accommodate patients in need of CRRT.

Staffing ratios typically range from 1 : 2-3, or 1 : 3-4 when floating to step-down units.

Travelers are welcome, and weekend shifts are required every other weekend.

Floating may be necessary to meet facility needs.

The unit features a mix of medical, surgical, and cardiovascular patients.

Technologies used include Swan catheters, ICU specialty beds, CRRT machines, and in-room monitors.

The environment supports collaborative care with additional interdisciplinary services.
