Job Summary
Facilitates communication between hearing and Deaf or hard of hearing individuals using American Sign Language and English in college classes, activities, events, and meetings. Performs related work as required. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Interprets / transliterates between American Sign Language and English. Typically interprets a regular schedule of classes and covers additional assignments that arise, including campus activities. Must be able to work well with others and work as a team interpreter. Schedules may require split shifts and travel between campuses. Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum Qualifications Utah Certified Novice Interpreter (UCNI), Utah Certified Deaf Interpreter (UCDI) or recognition of RID / national certification by Utah Interpreter Program required. Preferred Qualifications
- Utah Certified Professional Interpreter (UCPI) , National Interpreter Certification, RID CI / CT, or NAD 4 / 5 preferred.
- Completion of an Interpreter Training Program
- Bachelor’s Degree
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Must possess knowledge of and the ability to communicate in American Sign Language.Ability and knowledge of English required for applicants who can hear.Knowledge of and ability to apply the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct and standard practices for interpreting / transliterating in post secondary education.Skill in professional communication with faculty, staff, and students.Knowledge in math, English, and a wide range of college general education subjects.Knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture and Deaf history.Knowledge and ability to utilize technology required to perform job duties including email, various meeting platforms (MS Teams, Zoom) and various learning management systems (i.e. Canvas)Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties May be asked to mentor other interpreters or student interns.
