Description
The Manager, Shop is responsible for overseeing daily maintenance operations at an assigned shop location, ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant repair of Class 8 trucks, trailers, and related equipment. This role ensures optimal fleet performance, manages technician workflow, enforces safety protocols, and supports budget and inventory control. The Shop Manager plays a critical role in minimizing downtime and maintaining service readiness through strong team leadership and operational oversight.
Summary of Essential Job Functions
Fleet Maintenance & Asset Management
- Manages the repair and preventive maintenance of all trucks, trailers, and shop equipment.
- Ensures all work complies with DOT, OSHA, EPA, and internal safety regulations.
- Oversees shop workflow and technician assignments to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.
- Coordinates with other departments to ensure fleet availability meets operational requirements.
- Maintains accurate service records and repair documentation using maintenance software.
- Supports warranty claims, tracks parts usage, and ensures proper tool and equipment upkeep.
Team Leadership & Training
- Supervises a team of diesel technicians and shop support staff, ensuring proper staffing levels.
- Provides daily guidance, coaching, and technical support to team members.
- Promotes a safety-first culture through leadership, training, and accountability.
- Supports onboarding and development of new technicians, ensuring skill growth and performance alignment.
Budgeting & Vendor Coordination
- Manages the shop’s operating budget, including labor, parts, and outsourced services.
- Coordinates with vendors for parts orders, equipment service, and external repairs.
- Reviews expenses regularly to identify cost-saving opportunities and improve operational efficiency.
Operational Collaboration & Compliance
- Partners with fleet, dispatch, and operations teams to align maintenance priorities with delivery schedules.
- Ensures adherence to all local, state, and federal safety standards.
- Participates in inspections, audits, and reporting as required by internal or external stakeholders.
- Supports continuous improvement efforts and implements standardized shop procedures.

Requirements
Required Skills and Qualifications
- 5–7 years of experience in diesel maintenance or heavy-duty fleet operations.
- Minimum 2 years in a supervisory or lead technician role within a shop environment.
- Experience with Class 8 equipment and preventive maintenance systems.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Proficient in maintenance management software
- Working knowledge of DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
